Oh yeah, I have a new book out! A goofy horror comedy/ homage to campy horror movies, right on time for Halloween season! 🎃

Me: I will not buy any more books until I clear my TBR.

My brain: I will purchase more books to add to my TBR.

It's been quite a challenge #writing an MC who refuses to introspect, grow & take direct action. I set out on this project with that goal in mind, but it has made writing scenes where she interacts with others challenging. A departure from my usual stories where my MCs like to talk and take action.

I don't know why my brain feel so apprehensive about writing short stories. Like it's completely fine with writing novels (as my 115k words & counting project shows), but short stories - ironically - intimidate me. Any other writers out there like this?

Being well-read in your exact publishing genre/subgenre is very important. This reading informs you what your 'best' readers are reading now and will have read before they discover your novel. Readers have expectations groomed by the books they read.

When #writing you might find that the story is going in a direction you didn't intend. If it's interesting to you, then do not fret, keep on going and see where it ends up. If it isn't, or if it contradicts your themes or characters, do not feel married to it, but feel free to abandon that direction

Been working through my first draft since spring. For some reason this project just keeps growing and growing, seems inescapable (in a good way) 😅
#WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall Happy November, everyone! Will you be starting your new draft today? Have you already started? Do you need a couple more days to finish planning?

Last week I completed 90 consecutive days of writing. Decided to take the rest of the week off after hitting that milestone. Let me tell you, not writing after writing for so long felt like something was missing from my life.

Today I resumed my day writing practice and I feel much more whole 😌

This week’s flavor of writer’s block: I have a pretty solid idea of the internal journey that lies ahead for my MC, even a decent idea of the external journey, but I’m not entirely clear on what “set pieces” it should play out on. As a writer who likes visuals this is very important to me. #writing

I went to an indie wrestling show. The crowd was sizable but not huge, yet that didn’t stop the performers from giving it their all. From the set to selling the fights, the whole thing was an inspiring passion project.

Always create for yourself first no matter the size of the audience.

About 110k words into my story, way more than halfway through but I still have many tens of thousands of words left. Feeling some story fatigue set in. But I know that the only way this first draft is ever going to be finished is only if I keep on pushing. And I shall.

Short story #writers: where do you publish your stories? Do you submit to publications? Post on your own blog? Or maybe a place like Reddit or Substack?

Personally I usually just post my stuff to Reddit. It’s the platform I understand the most & I am not patient enough for the publication route 😅

I got a positive comment from a reader this morning on a serial I’ve been posting that I didn’t know anyone was reading & it has made my day.

If you enjoy somebody’s art & if you have the means & time tell the artist, tell them. One simple comment can change someone’s day for the better.

I did not expect one of the hardest scenes for me to write in my WIP to be a flashback explaining how my chronically depressed, antisocial & cynical MC met her husband (who’s the opposite of her). Maybe I should read more romance to know how to write these scenes better 😆 #writing

How are we already almost 70% through October. What the heck?

I grew up reading so much manga that my natural instinct is to read every comic book from right to left, including western comics.

Just hammering out & submitting a short story to Reddit all within an hour or two is honestly one of my favorite underrated #writing exercises. It forces you to “yes-and” yourself, commit to ideas without 2nd thought, & the minimal editing helps with being okay with releasing imperfect stories.

As a writer, the hardest thing I find to write are the set up scenes. The ones where characters make decisions that will impact the rest of the trajectory of the story. Even if I outline I still struggle with these scene because I keep on wondering if it’s the best way to do the set up.

One of my favorite under-appreciated styles of #writing are “vibe stories”, stories that evoke a certain feeling without having to strictly deliver on plot. Usually done through setting / atmosphere, & characterization. The plot is there but it’s usually in the background. Stories like ambient music

Yesterday I completed one of my favorite self imposed #writing challenges I’ve ever done. It consisted of 75 days of:
- 1.5 hrs of creative work each day (1/2 must be toward my WIP, the other 1/2 can be whatever)
- Reading a few pages from craft book each day
- Reading fiction for 30 min / day

Good morning #authors, what are we working on this week?

I just wrapped up a big beat in my story so I’m planning the next beat / sequence & writing it this week.

This weekend I hit 100k words making this officially the biggest book I’ve ever worked on, and there’s still plenty more to go! Estimated 40k to 80k words left, which seems daunting but I’ve already written more than half the book, so I know it’s doable!

#PlotTober My MC has been so beaten down by so many external demands & has felt led astray by false promises in her career & marriage. She’s too risk averse to leave & believes that the world exists only to use people. The culmination of these beliefs is the entire reason why she’s on the expedition

My characters have been stuck in a forest for 40k words. I don’t want this book to be about people stuck in a forest but apparently this is the Forest of Plot™️ since so much story is happening here. I’m like: this is great & all but this is supposed to be an adventure book, let’s move it! 🤣 #writing
