I have too much snow in my driveway so I ordered groceries delivered. We are technically in between storms till tomorrow so I will get more snow as I live in the foothills. I do need to get more bird seed but I have enough for another week or so.

We got 8+ inches of snow yesterday with a slight pause today and another storm tomorrow. Yikes!

I hope your weather is reasonable in your location today. All of this will hit the East Coast in a few days. We all get the gift of big snow.

The objective is to find a home online for your short works such that readers have the opportunity to read your writing long before your novel comes out. You need fans. Fans need to be seduced by reading you. So write short on Wednesdays and sell them on Fridays.

Technically, you should be writing your 4th short story of 2026. These can be micro fiction of a few hundred words, flash, poetry, shorty shorts, regular length shorts, novelettes, novellas or longer. They can also be nonfiction and essays. Write!

Good morning fabulous Wednesday writers!

Are you up yet? Functional? Blurry? Grumpy? Arguing with your eyelids?

Today you are writing a short story in order to grow your fan base. Enjoy yourself. Cast off your concerns with everything else and simply write.

A resistance to infection likely exists within human populations which allows visibility of those 'not complying' with parasitic messaging. The parasite may be unable to infect if certain medications are onboard the host. Lack of exposure may also factor in.

We know people are behaving counter to species survival right now. This isn't logical. This may be a parasitic invasion on a scale we cannot imagine. It includes denial of a problem. Very sophisticated. I mentioned Taxoplasmosis to give you a view of this potential.

Taxoplasmosis Gondi is a parasite most humans pick up touching cat poo. After it attaches to your brain your behavior changes. It increases hoarding of stuff, causes reduced driving skills in males and with rats, makes them fail to respond to cat threat (death).

You can do an experiment where you jot down the people in your immediate family and then describe them as characters. Then erase the physical description leaving only behavior assessments, intellect, actions, mental health, and all the real bits.

What people retain is what they know. When reading a book the reader peoples the characters with their known to the reader real life counterparts. An older woman character will be fleshed out like your grandmother or her friends. Characterization is about trust.

When you write a character your reader WILL NEVER see them in the flesh. You are talking about a skinned person. Those visual cues are missing even when you say junk like beautiful or you relate them to a celebrity. The reading brain won't retain the description.

An actor identified as a character actor is recognizable and memorable. They have not shaped their face by the doctor's knife but by the circumstances they have lived through. There is some correlation between becoming a known character and difficulty to deal with.

If you watch television you will notice women, in particular, are like clones on the screen. They are so similar you may struggle to identify one or the other. This is such an issue there are names for the Mar-a-lago face. There is the erasure of character.

I spoke recently about Peter Dinklage. He is an actor. He has dwarfism and that informs how his facial features developed, how his eyes convey meaning. That cannot be faked. He is instantly authentic in every setting I've witnessed. I trust he is what I see.

Characters are shaped by the edges. This means what rubs against the person, shapes them like a sharpening stone. A misaligned character is wearing an outer costume to hide their true nature. Observant people will lose trust in the creator of such characters.

When you write your novel you should avoid 'film casting' hunting the most attractive actors for roles. Film casting ignores what you know about the behavior of people. It leans in to a selling metric, not what shapes characters in real life. Misalignment.

February 17, 2026 at 7:21 PM
Many writers can watch films and pick out where the writer has gotten some character's wrong. There is a growing misalignment in film and tv as the industry leans in to stereotypes instead of real human behavior. We see the distortions and lack of diversity.

Are you the person who attends a neighborhood party only to sit off to the side and watch your neighbors behaving? Do they encourage you to drink alcohol and join in? If you remain sober you will remember them in disinhibited state. They don't want that.

Most writers acknowledge that they are voyeurs. They can go shopping and mean they are visiting a busy parking lot to watch the people actually spending money. They may take notes, have the radio softly playing and even a nice beverage as they watch.

What you experience in real life translates well into novel form. The same characteristics you witness daily, other people witness too. When you write what you know your writing will feel more authentic as people experience the truth of your lifelong observations.

The best characters to write about are those you know well. These are family members and the people you see regularly. You will know their personality traits and witness their decision making. You can evaluate the success of their critical thinking skills.

Some people like having a new novel they can pick at, like a side sneaky relationship affair. I do that in between officially writing my next novel. It's a lie to my own brain but whose to know inside my own head. Do what works for you today. You make the rules.

Part of your writing success is to form the intention to write and move your brain into the habit of writing frequently. This frequency overcomes the blank page problem. Stop making starting some big deal. It isn't. Let your writing habit assist you later.

I have multiple inches of snow outside my window which means a snow day for me. Me no drive anywhere. I am planning to cook spaghetti and maybe make biscuits for it and generally, only deal with walking out to feed my ferals. On snow days that's under a covered porch for the birds.
