Ageing techie with a menagerie of dogs, donkeys, cows, chickens and bees. 🇬🇧 immigrant in 🇫🇷. 🏳️‍🌈 he/him, 🏳️‍⚧️ ally.
Another infuriating victory for fear and hatred in the public sphere. The Infinite Monkey Cage was a gem. It's terrible news that @robinince.bsky.social has been forced out.
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

We've started doing one of these printed gazette things for my 88yo Mum. For the Christmas issue I wanted to do a selfie with one of my geese. They're such drama queens. They scream blue murder when you pick them up and then they shit on you. They're awkward and heavy to hold. It's not going well.

Support for trans folk seems to have collapsed in the UK. Every day the news gets worse. It's revolting and so depressing. Your occasional reminder that it doesn't have to be this way (and in France it's not).
Can someone explain the reason that The Times, a former newspaper of record ffs, and Joshua Bratt decided to misgender this person - who, by all accounts, has by this point fully transitioned - throughout the piece? Is it some sort of right-wing journalist dare now to disrespect people for clicks?
You might think from the headline that this is a story about a trans kid suffering medical consequences from a large drug dose but nope! It is just an interview with an estranged father who is angry that his child happily transitioned.

Just for the record, "men" is the Old English word for "people" (which itself comes from French) so the meaning is identical despite her rantings.

Male men used to be called "weremen" (hence werewolves) and females "wifmen". Over time the "were" got dropped for men and "wifmen" became "women".

A lot of hate for Meta for this and it's a stupendous amount of money to piss up the wall for nothing. Just a thought though. Where did the money go? I suspect much of it directly or indirectly went to paying wages. It's a weird form of redistribution but better that than sat in Zuck's bank account.
Mark Zuckerberg’s gamble on the "Metaverse" has lost his company more than $77 billion.

I can't help but feel that this is the wrong time of year to be posting this.
We should stop calling it a 'sun tan' and call it what it actually is - sun damage.

Imagine showing a petrol engine to someone who had only known electric vehicles, and trying to convince them to switch to petrol. No-one would choose the dirty, noisy, less efficient, more expensive vehicle. This isn't 1910, hostage to gender insecurity. We can just choose the better tech.

I'm not a Christmas hater but it's still November and BFMTV is playing Last Christmas as a backing track for the weather. I am so not here for that.

Wasn't allowed to do CS A Level (teacher didn't want me in his class). Too many mental health problems for uni. Abortive attempt to do HNC. After a decade of fucking around I got a temp job in a market research dept which turned perm and then finally a sideways move into IT dept.
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

I left the UK in 2019. France is no utopia but there is little of the febrile culture war discourse here. French news is watchable, the problems largely quotidian; unlike the UK and US where the news is just relentlessly awful. It's hardly surprising that people are leaving he UK in droves.
It's time we asked a different question about migration: Why are so many British people leaving the UK?

With the prospect of Farage in No 10 and Le Pen in the Élysée, things could potentially go very badly for recent British immigrants in France like me.
Reform now plan to cut EU nationals out of universal credit (ditch the UK-EU withdrawal treaty unilaterally). But this could have significant impacts on British citizens in Europe, and on the UK-EU relationship on economics, trade

Reform would ‘cut benefits for EU nationals and hike NHS immigration surcharge’
Party claims its policies would eliminate ‘black hole’ Rachel Reeves faces in the budget – but Labour says the ‘fantasy numbers don’t add up’

If nothing else they connect us in the present with our ancient past. We are all, no matter when we, or our families, arrived here, part of this island story; from the Younger Dryas to this very moment. If you can't see the poetry in that, that's on you.
Nothing disappoints harder than a stone circle. The way people bang on about them you'd think they would be at least an interesting experience, preferably an emotional one. They're neither.

AI clusterfuck - a French politician posts an image with Brittany twice and a French soldier in a German army helmet. FFS, when will people learn?
Il me semble qu'une ex-ministre des anciens combattants vient de tweeter une image de casque allemand de la seconde guerre mondiale en hommage aux soldats français de la première...

I live in Normandy. There are flag-shaggers here who basically cosplay WWII all year round. They show up at every memorial service in uniforms and Jeeps. Live and let live and all that but it just seems really ghoulish to me.
Remembrance Day is now dominated by performative nonsense. You don't need a house sized poppy and a model spitfire to show you care about the sacrifices made for the country. Where's the sense of dignity and the quiet respect gone?

Nothing. It's taken 40 years struggling with my mental health to get here but now I think he'd love this life I've built for myself. The same goes for my 8yo self too.
What do you like now that 16 year old you would hate you for?
