Tonight, APPAM President Ingrid Gould Ellen shared an important message with #2025APPAM attendees: Going Local: The Value of Research on Local Government Policies & Programs. As she passed the gavel to President-Elect, Kosali Simon, we toasted her service over the past two years.

The neighbors did this, but if @boston.gov, @wutrain.bsky.social, @ben4district6.bsky.social and others were serious about affordable housing in Boston they would do more to not let it happen.
People in my "progressive" neighborhood NIMBY'd a *senior affordable housing development* into reducing its units from 71 to 41. Just an absolute moral travesty. (Rogerson/Beaufort project in JP)

Sadly, based on tonight's meeting, local NIMBYs got the number of units cut nearly in half and @boston.gov @mayorwu.boston.gov are unwilling to push back in support of needed affordable housing. www.universalhub.com/2024/135-aff...

Legal academics: I am trying to decide whether it is worth the effort to develop and maintain a personal academic website. Questions: 1. do you have one?; 2. why do you think it valuable; 3. examples of sites you think are great; 4. services for creating/hosting/whatever you recommend?

Came across this article from 1948 defending zoning on Martha's Vineyard: vineyardgazette.com/news/1948/01...
"The New Englander dislikes change almost more than he dislikes regulation. Therefore the fact that each community must make its own zoning laws, . . .

This is fantastic. @boston.gov can we get this?
Just noticed this on the checkout notification I get from the Chicago Public Library. I think it’s new and I love it!

Why do sentences like this keep getting written @bostonglobe.com : "Developers and planners often argue that new supply will ease the housing crunch, but Lees isn’t convinced unit counts alone will solve the problem." The words "ease" & "solve" differ in meaning. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/08/20/r...
High hopes: How Boston could rise to become an urban utopia - The Boston Globe
Red tape and NIMBY neighbors are keeping the city from adding housing. But when it comes to accepting density, the future is now.

A good letter generally, but not sure about the line in paragraph 4: "The United States Constitution established that local governments . . . " The US Constitution says nothing about local governments. The authority local governments have regarding public safety is delegated by the states.
Last week, Boston received a letter from AG Bondi threatening to prosecute officials and withhold funds unless we cooperate with carrying out mass deportations.

The US Attorney General asked for a response by today, so here it is: stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures.
