New work to appear @ TACL!

Language models (LMs) are remarkably good at generating novel well-formed sentences, leading to claims that they have mastered grammar.

Yet they often assign higher probability to ungrammatical strings than to grammatical strings.

How can both things be true? 🧵👇

Answer: 75% of all American farm workers are Latin American migrants. Yes, the same folks that the party red states support want to deport.

And no, they’re not doing it “to be nice.”
California alone produces a third of all the food America eats. So this is a lie.

But let’s break down the food produced by the red states:

Guess what percent is harvested by people from Latin America?

It’s 2030 and the evidence is clear. Much autism is age related non-inherited mutations in sperm and egg DNA. 16y is the best age for reproduction.

So does everyone freeze sperm/eggs for use at age 30? Universal IVF?

Income based definitions of “middle” class are part of why most pundits completely missed the 25yo American crisis.
Could someone explain to me what is meant when a British person refers to "the middle class" ? Like, in the US, as I hear it, it basically just means a person who makes a certain amount of money, not too far below and not wildly above the median. Seems like a complex concept when UK writers use it?

That was a different nation. America has been falling for a long time. It’s not just Trump.
Remember 25 years ago when a photo was taken of a fed pointing a gun at a crying refugee child and the image was so shameful it dominated the news cycle for a year

I was curious what religion LLMs would go for. Of course they've been designed not to answer, but they'll respond to "Which religion would a sentient ai prefer?"

There were a lot of honorable people in the justice department. (Not all who remain are dishonorable, but they are in a bad spot.)
"Last year, roughly 10,000 attorneys worked across the Justice Department and its components, including the FBI. Justice Connection, an advocacy group that has been tracking departures, estimates that around 5,500 people — not all of them attorneys — have quit." wapo.st/3JG4ImA
Justice Department struggles as thousands exit — and few are replaced
The Justice Department has lost thousands of experienced attorneys and backfilled a fraction of the open jobs, in part because of a lack of qualified candidates.

It would be nice to have a culture where there was a price for running scams.
RFK Jr in 2023: "I have never been anti-vax." 2025: "God is an anti-vaxxer, and he needs you to speak up,” declared Del Bigtree, a close ally of Mr. Kennedy, at a MAHA meeting this weekend. @sherylnyt.bsky.social reports. [Gift link] nyti.ms/47zoBoz

This GOP senator certainly understands risk pools. He dislikes them because he is opposed to idea of social supports. He is lying as part of a scam he is running on the LIVs.
Tell me you don’t understand risk pools without telling me you don’t understand risk pools

Still no sure which of these sad sacks was most pathetic in "explaining" the cave in.

So far, I think it's a tie between King, and Hassan.

(But unfair contest, because we didn't get to hear from Fetterman or Durbin.)
Not a political consultant but I’m not sure “standing up to trump doesn’t work” is the best midterm message, even if if accurately represents senate dems position. Not much point in putting you in power then bsky.app/profile/atru...

If you decide to unfollow someone, and they are on a list, you need to hunt them down in the list and remove them there as well.

It would be nice if there were an option when unfollowing to also remove from all lists.

I don’t think the data needed is terribly hard to get.

It’s nice to know when an apparently stable democracy has actually been in the red zone for 30 years.
And one that sociology needs:

1. Nation-state stability metric.

This is politically very helpful for Dems.
Senate update: Republicans are now trying to sneak a backdoor national abortion ban into their government funding bill. Republicans will stop at nothing to control women's health care decisions.

Great comment. Border Patrol seems to be the bottom of the dregs.
Not ICE. Border Patrol. They’re wearing Border Patrol uniforms with clear Border Patrol patches on them.

There are many videos of ICE officers doing outrageous stuff but a lot of the absolute worst videos are of Border Patrol, who are basically Bovino and Miller’s most aggressive tool right now.
ICE agents in Chicago violently detain a non verbal autistic man for being “non compliant”

He couldn’t “comply” because of his disability…they don’t care

This is not the first time they’ve gone after a disabled person

They target the most vulnerable because it’s an easy way to meet their quota

Lastly there’s Emmanuel Garcia, a 15 year old autistic boy who went missing a month ago.

Houston PD had his mother’s missing persons report, but chose to call ICE.

He’s been in federal custody ever since, and his mother has not been allowed to see him
