Sir Stephen House, the deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan police, said the tactic of going limp was a “flipping nuisance” as it required extra officers to drag protesters away.
House told a London assembly police and crime committee hearing: “We have asked them to stop being floppy. And that might seem like a silly thing to say, but when we arrest them and pick them up, they go all floppy, which is why you see four or five officers carrying them away. It’s a complete waste of officers’ time, and a complete pain in the neck.”

the UK is (not just the originator but) the setting for some of the most popular culture in the world. there is a whole genre of videogames that are set in an imagined Britain. 'soft' power is real economic and even political power.

Agree. One thing that I really liked about @jpspencer.bsky.social’s Labour Together report is it included culture in “growth spending”. So much policy about regional development in the UK basically regards culture, tourism, etc. as distractions from the real work of building trains to nowhere.

people have already covered all the "yes, it was stupider than you could possibly imagine" so i want to bring up the fact that much of it was something of a looped, enhanced version of the stupidity that gripped America during Desert Storm. a true peek into the ongoing Robocop-ification of America

RE: protests in LA. Notice how the cops are just openly shooting people in front of a million cameras? They're not trying to restore order, they're trying to scare people. They need fear to outweigh outrage.
