Most episodes of Halemaʻumaʻu lava fountaining since the eruption started on Dec. 23, 2024, have continued for a day or less & have been separated by pauses in eruptive activity lasting at least several days.

The OOI-RCA cruise has been conducting multiple dives at Axial Seamount (an underwater volcano off the Oregon coast), including deployments at several different hydrothermal vent fields. The weather has been excellent for ROV operations - hopefully that will hold for the next few days!

We visited Southern Hydrate Ridge earlier in the cruise, a dynamic site with active methane venting, exposed gas hydrate (methane ice!), and a diverse biological community - including rockfish, skates, and scavenging hagfish swarming around a sablefish carcass! 🌊🚢🧪

The single most important laboratory in climate science, the tool that is telling us the story of our time, is now in the MAGA crosshairs. Not surprising. But sad, stupid, and tragic in the saddest and stupidest and most tragic way.
The Trump administration is planning to cancel its lease at a government laboratory in Hawaii, a site where scientists support key observations of surging greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere, according to a list obtained by Democratic members of Congress and shared with The Post.
Trump moves to close facility that helps track planet-warming pollution
The lab is connected to the Mauna Loa Observatory, where scientists gather data to produce the Keeling Curve, a chart on the daily status of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.

You know about the atmospheric CO₂ measurements from Mauna Loa. But did you know that NOAA also measures other greenhouse and ozone-depleting gases worldwide?

Here are CFC-11 and CFC-12, widely used as refrigerants, foam-blowing agents, solvents, and aerosol propellants

NOAA manages large ocean fisheries in US waters. Scientists there conduct surveys, sample fish, and run complex models to estimate the levels of sustainable catches. NOAA is recognized as a world leader in creating jobs, producing food, and avoiding overfishing. Kudos to NOAA fisheries!!!!
