Can anyone recommend French language podcasts, audiobooks etc? Bonus for Québécois. I’m unemployed and Canadian so I’m trying to refresh my years of French study in Aus for fun and profit. I’m around B2/C1, and it’s 20 years since I spent a year in France so I’m rusty.

Semiotic observation. I think this was supposed to be hopscotch but I didn’t realise til I saw it went up to twelve because hearts in rows and pairs don’t signify hopscotch like squares.

Got an article accepted (yay). The process of reidentifying the article is always doubly tedious because not only do I have to add my name in for citations, I have to add Jim Martin’s initials to his citations to differentiate him from me. That’s at least a dozen more “words” on the word count!

Birds are weird. And that is glorious.
Forward facing in flight brandt's cormorant!!!

The first picture made the skeletal system of the limbs of birds clear to me in a whole new way. Knees, elbows, ankles and wrists. All clear. Very cool.
Haven't seen a bird yet today? Post a bird to make up for it.

This sequence is how I discovered that ospreys can hover, an amazing thing to see for the first time. Four consecutive frames at 20fps. Over Green Lake, Seattle (Jun 2024)

Me looking at paint recently: why do we focus on blue with peacocks when their tails have a range of colours?

Me looking at a peacock: oh yeah.

Indulgent teacher share: one of my courses I have students self-evaluate their participation several times a term. I love it because it gives me a forum to gently encourage (I appreciate your questions in class) and to nudge in feedback without it being a judgement in the first place.

It’s been the sort of day to just scroll the bird photography feed when everything else gets too much.

Selecting student evaluation comments for a job app. Enjoying this:

“Made class fairly engaging, despite not being a huge fan of writing I find that I was still able to enjoy the class itself – not so much the assignments, but the class & the instructor's instruction was good”

First snow of the season in Vancouver, first 40° day of the season in Adelaide. My parents and I started reminiscing on school closures for heat or their lack while I check to see if campus will be closed for snow tomorrow.

Writing a job application. Damn I’m good. How am I still looking for ongoing work?
a cartoon rabbit is laying down with his hands behind his head and a few stars around his neck .
Alt: a cartoon rabbit is striking a pose by raising looking up to the side and placing one hand behind its head. Stars appear as the pose is held. It conveys exaggerated self pride.

Genuine question: do we have phrasing for how to announce an article which was previously published online but has now been given volume, issue, page numbers? I’m really struggling to figure out how to talk about it. It’s not newly published, but it is??

Had an article published online in 2023. It has just been given a volume and issue and pages and a publication date of 2025. In the meantime, my Twitter handle in the contact details is rather less relevant than it had been.

OMG. A thing about teaching in an international student program is they don't really give much response on the student evaluations of teaching. I just got my first one in a long time from direct entry students, and the single USELESS PROFESSOR comment has me reeling a little.

I actually got asked on a job application for the title of my PhD thesis… and I had to turn to the bookshelf and look because I blanked on one of the words.

I’m squeezing in some job applications between finalising grades and Christmas holiday. They’re only a cover letter plus cv or resume, but still hours of work. How any job can justify requiring 150 page application packages, when it’s such a waste of time for everyone involved is beyond me.

Colleague and I are live chatting through marking and it’s my favourite way to mark. Commenting about the student who impressively formatted each of 6 references incorrectly in different ways. Then getting back to marking because I’m competitive and she’s ahead of me.

I looked at the stack of books on the chair beside my desk and it seemed rather appropriate.

Educational lit search request: what’s the best ref for saying small class sizes are good for a) language learning b) writing classes. I saw something recently but can’t remember and need to slot it into an intro.

It’s my monthly coffee club day. It gives me a reason to tidy and clean my house as well as regular friend time. After scrambling to get final tasks done in the morning, this is perhaps the best moment: drinking my coffee on the couch, listening to music before anyone arrives. Prospect of friends.

@laetitiam.bsky.social heyyyyyyyyyyyy!

I know Facebook is still there… but this is nice.

In other news I’m on here because I have an article due tonight I’m desperately trying to weave literature into. So relevant for the #linguistics crowd: every item I’ve entered into zotero I had to check and correct the langauge typo. I swear I’ll still have to do a find-all+replace.
