In about three years the entire university pivot to AI curricula and schools and programs is going to be so deeply embarrassing. We will all pretend it never happened and I will be standing there, looking at people with a mirror in my eyes. This is all so embarrassing.

Here’s a fun @ncrabbithole.com -y fact I just learned:

2 of the *worlds* 5 oldest rivers run through North Carolina. The French Broad (#3) and New River (#4) both flow in NC. They are older than the Atlantic ocean that they currently run in to. Don’t know what to do with that info, but it’s fun.

What's most interesting to me about this is that it's the same places winning as when I was living there more than a decade ago.

This is funny, but they need to add another zero onto the tax evasion number for a house like this.

Hey #librarysky: this is a minor emergency. Can someone tell me a brief recent history (post 2015) of DPLA and where it stands today? I’m supposed to know things at a meeting tomorrow 😬

OK. So I just finished the episode of Southbound by @tommytomlinson.bsky.social with @ncrabbithole.com. CANNOT BELIEVE I WAS NAME CHECKED! Thank you both so much. Rabbit Hole questions, by their very nature, are always fun to dive into. Give SouthBound a listen here:

since @drpattijones.bsky.social asked, some similar numbers for unc:

as of june 30, 2024, unc's endowment was $5.6 billion. (there's another $5.5 billion in the system-wide endowment that unc-chapel hill's board helps manage.)

$784 million (14%) of the chapel hill endowment is unrestricted
some numbers for folks curious about duke's finances:

as of june 2024, duke had an $11.9 billion endowment. a little over 2/3 of that is restricted in what it can be used for, but $3.4 billion (about 29%) is unrestricted

Okay, so let's say a North Carolina supreme court candidate succeeds in disqualifying thousands of voters who followed all of the rules they were given. How would you even be able to go back and find their ballots to see how they voted?

Here's how: www.ncrabbithole.com/p/nc-supreme...
An election loser wants to win by disqualifying thousands of voters. How can you even find their ballots?
Most of the votes challenged by Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin weren't flagged when they were cast. So how would you actually match up the ballot with the voter? Aren't votes secret?

is there a good way to let people “pay” for a blog post while keeping it open and self-hosted. basically like a “tip” button but without the self-deprecating “buy me a coffee” connotation. just like, wanna pay for this, go ahead
