What the Oregonian left out about dan handelman, what will likely be a long running thread over time.

Portland needs more public bathrooms. It’s undignified for folks to have to find corners and crevices to go. I’m not even talking only about unhoused folks. People at transit centers waiting for the Max have to find a store and buy something to access a bathroom. Walking in a park, down avenues, etc

I think just learning that PPB has uniformed chaplains is going to be quite the discovery, let alone just how ill aligned this one is
Here's Portland Police Chaplain Clyde Lewis on a flyer for the far-right Christian Nationalist and anti-LGBTQ+ rights group "Don't Mess With Our Kids." Their goal is to criminalize LGBTQ+ people, do conversion therapy on them, ban same-sex marriage, ban abortion, and install the theocracy.

This question was settled a long time ago, and the answer is a resounding, but uncompromising no. This isn’t about a “big tent.” This is about not letting in the people trying to burn down the tent.
When leaders at the Northwest Oregon Labor Council voted to allow the Portland police union to join their ranks, it prompted a sizable controversy among labor and police accountability advocates. The council will now take a wider vote on the issue at the end of the month.
Does a “Big Tent” Approach to Labor Include Police Unions?
When members of Portland’s broader labor ecosystem found out about the city police union’s bid to join the Northwest Oregon Labor Council (NOLC), many immediately reacted with suspicion. While the Por...

Dan's humor strikes again 😂
I've been off for a week, meaning I missed the news of Dan Handelman's passing ("Handel, like the pianist, not like the thing you use to flush a toilet," he'd remind me too often).

His encyclopedic knowledge of Portland policing & civil rights work was a gift. He'll be missed.

The system dan attempted to build was pulled apart by the city attorneys and the PPA, both brazenly in public and in backdoor deals (the bias clause). Never forget. Our Portland city attorneys do not want citizen police oversight and accountability. Never forget.
Dan Handelman was a tireless voice for the cause of police accountability in Portland. We didn't always agree, but no one worked harder or longer or dreamed more expansively of what community safety could look like. Rest easy, Dan. I'm sorry you never got to see the system you built.

Can we make dan the Elvis of Portland Copwatch? Have his existence immortalized in the dark corners of policing? With glimpses of him reported at all policing oversight meetings as he mysteriously pops up in the live chat? Forever?

20th anniversary of Pdx cops and a Multnomah Co Deputy killing James Chasse. How does PPB commemorate this touchstone event of the DOJ agreement to plead with Portland cops to stop killing folks in mental health crisis? Why it promotes one of the killers, to Captain of the Training Division.
