Trump’s pick to chair the FCC signals willingness to revoke broadcasting licenses that the Trump admin deems as not operating “in the public interest.”

By doing so, he’s also implicitly coercing outlets to engage in self-censorship.

Controlling the media is a way authoritarians consolidate power.

Had the opportunity to moderate a discussion with my team on the lessons we’ve learned educating a staff of 7000 hospital employees on race and racism, WHILE being people of color ourselves.

We left X and joined Bluesky because those against our parks said, “If you don’t like it, leave.” So we did. And now they’re saying, “No, come back so we can say mean things to you—it makes us feel important.”

I introduced the term "race evaders" for those in the field of language development (or any field) who rhetorically circumvent race so that racist assumptions embedded in their arguments become more palatable.

FYI, the Linguistic Anthropology starter pack has a feed, which you can use to keep up with people skeeting from the conference (and beyond).

the system preceding race and gender integrated education and DEI was not even facially "meritocratic" - elite higher ed served as finishing schools for rich failsons, half of admissions criteria were invented to keep out Jews. the naked cronyism is the America they wanted to return to "greatness"

A Latinx mom came up to me after a talk: “Dr. Mike, I loved your talk…[etc.].” She is holding hand of tiny, little brown boy.

Walking away, I hear a tiny, excited voice say:

“Mom, We can be doctors?”

Little boy didn’t know brown folks could be doctors. 😭 heart instantly broke.

In a blue state but fear this change is coming either way.

It will be annoying af but we don’t need the term DEI in order to do the work we need to do.

We're now following over a thousand linguists on here!

If you're looking for more linguistics to enliven your feed, check out our following list!

And let us know if we've missed you!
PSA: starter packs are capped at 150 people, so we're following back everyone we find who has linguist (or a subfield/interdisciplinary field thereof) in their bio to try to help create a longer list so people can find each other!

So far over 600, yay!

If we've missed you let us know!

Don’t have an answer to this but I teach on this as a potential micro-aggression at the hospital I work at. Always have a good chunk who get it but also (White) colleagues who push back and say “well then how do I build rapport with people???”
"Where are you from?" is a common question in public discussions for its coded/explicit racist/nativist tone (it is a language and social justice issue for sure). I'd love to think w/others on how to write /educate folks about the trauma activated by the question. also any pubs you can share please?
