My great-grandpa was resilient, & after a few more deportations, eventually got a green card & moved the family to LA in the 50s.

I’ll never forget the stories I’ve learned about the way this country received us, the names they called us. & I will not turn my back on immigrants today.

My great grandpa, Andrés Luna, arrived in Chicago from Mexico in 1926 with a permanent visa. But during the Great Depression, and under a federal program known as the Mexican Repatriation, was deported.

The presidential slogan at the time: American Jobs for Real Americans.
