Jamaica, in particular, will likely suffer catastrophic impacts from now rapidly-intensifying (but slow-moving) Hurricane #Melissa. A *Category 5* landfall now appears to be the most likely outcome, & 30-40+ inches of *additional* rain in mountains will lead to extreme flooding.

Today, the U.S. faces one billion+ dollar climate/weather disaster on average every 2w. That's a massive increase from one every 4m in the 1980s.

This is 'global weirding' and people are taking notice!

The government told NOAA to stop tracking these events: but @climatecentral.org is on the job.

The findings of this study (decreased ocean greenness) are closely tied to our (@lijingcheng.bsky.social et al) previous findings of an increasing trend in ocean stratification. See e.g. my @newsweek.com commentary on that study: www.newsweek.com/climate-chan...
The Oceans Appear to Be Stabilizing. Here's Why it's Very Bad News
A more stably stratified ocean potentially favors more intense, destructive hurricanes—and that's not all.

A M6.9 earthquake struck Cebu island in the Philippines today, causing at least 20 deaths.

The rupture seems to have occurred on an unmapped fault, started below the ocean and continuing to the southwest, passing near populated areas of Cebu.

Great in-depth article about the M8.8 earthquake in Kamchatka - exploring all the fun questions, like:

What was it about the foreshock sequence that triggered the M8.8?
Why wasn't the tsunami bigger?
Did the earthquake trigger an eruption?

Answers are hard, but the science process is fun.
