How much calories is in a guava? Everyone says it's 68kcal/100g because everyone used the number from USDA. But the Thai FDA says it's 35kcal, AU/NZ says it's 34.4kcal, and SG says it's 42kcal. That's almost half the USDA number.

trying to give desktop linux a go (i.e., not wsl/docker/on server over ssh). unfortunately will have to return back to windows because amdgpu driver keeps freezing up every hour (or every 10 minutes on chromium!). desktop linux still isn't ready in 2025.

the weather in thailand is amazing. the sky was blue, then it suddenly turned gray and rained for 20 minutes, and now it's clear blue again.

holy fuck, I thought getting good text layout from MS Word was annoying, but at least it's possible. I cannot get anything good out of Google Docs. The only good use for this frustrating piles of shit is for expose/apology docs.

The way iOS devs has to go around Apple to make animated widgets is crazy.

this hotel I stayed at had the genius idea of plugging the room wifi into a socket that is tied to the room key slot. so you can see which room is occupied by the room wifi being on/off 🤦

My thoughts on Bluesky verification as someone who was deeply involved in an analogous scheme (selecting trusted root CAs for browsers) at Mozilla many years ago. The analogy is not exact: not trusting a verifier just means no checkmark, while not trusting a root CA means nasty security warnings 1/

Thank you opensuse team <3, you and snapper saved my ass from an interrupted update that somehow deleted the shell.

Amazing that a trillion dollar corp can't implement session restore or data clearing. In MS Edge, if you have "clear browser history on exit" and "open tabs from previous session", then it would sometimes not restore the tabs (most time it does). Smells like race condition. :/

One reason I worry about LLMs is that research doesn't just give you the answer – it can't know that – it introduces you to worlds of context you have to parse through and decipher and explore, and through that build up a huge collection of incidental random competency. This just takes time. A life.

oh boy, i sure love some projects that don't have docker/nix/etc where you have to binary search the exact version of compiler it wants. ☺️

my university's login system forced reset my password today. the only problem is their requirements are bonkers! my password manager gave me a password with "456" and that's not allowed 🤦‍♀️

Isn't this a great news to wake up to? I sure love doomscrolling though a list of most of the world countries with a new US tariff number attached to it.

the pedestrian crossings around new buildings at my uni had a raised road that makes the waking path level instead of a curb cut. that's so neat. good job to the people who designed it

came across this blog after some jumping into rabbit hole about timestamps. it's like a blog version of tom scott's time zone rant

Stumbled into a conversation about the idea of kanji phasing out from Japanese in an increasingly digital world, and it's weebs vs linguists.

Now, the important background here is that kanji is used in written Japanese to resolve the large number of homonyms in the language.

American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, Jeffrey Goldberg. theatln.tc/IuULQFiY
The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans
U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.
