Man on his phone: Absolutely. Consider it done. Love you.
He hangs up, winces and says ‘Oh God’ with the distinct awkwardness of someone who just said ‘love you’ to his boss.

Dancer here. If men in strip clubs knew how dancers talk about them in the dressing room, they would never come back. Best case is pity. Mostly we think you're scum. We know you all think you're the exception. Making you think that is our job.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but up until the age of 15 I thought all cats were female and all dogs were male. Openly shared this knowledge with a school friend who then went on to make sure everyone in school knew, including my teachers.

We are in a struggle against populism. That is the story of our age. It desires a closed society: closed to people, and goods, and ideas. It would impoverish us, then use the hatred and anger which results to target immigrants in ever more grievous ways

It’s more to do with a relative lack (not absence though) of literature and a perception from some old school scholarship that civilisation ended with Rome - which it didn’t. Like I said elsewhere, the literature and art are amazing.

Offline, I've been asked why the Dark Ages isn't an appropriate term for the Early Medieval period. Bottom line, you'd be hard pressed to make something as stunning as the Alfred Jewel if you couldn't see what you were doing. End of. www.ashmolean.org/alfred-jewel
ALFRED JEWEL
The Alfred Jewel is a masterpiece of goldsmith's work formed around a tear-shaped slice of rock crystal. Its inscription: AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN – 'Alfred ordered me to be made’ – connects the jewe...

Ponies grazing on the Long Mynd, Shropshire, England.

Far from being wild, these ponies are owned by a group of farmers, known as ‘commoners’.

Commoning began on the Long Mynd over 2000 years ago and there is written evidence of organised management from the 13th century.

This is my favorite of the many version of “A Christmas Carol.” George C. Scott, despite being American, plays the role perfectly, and the location filming in Shrewsbury enhances the Dickensian atmosphere.
The other actors are wonderful, especially Susannah York as an unusually strong Mrs. Cratchit.

Okay, okay. Time for some real holiday cheer.

A Christmas Carol (1984)
The classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, haunted by three ghosts before Christmas Day.
George C. Scott is still a powerful force, and makes this TV movie an all timer.
Who's seen this one? Or what's your definitive Christmas Carol?
