BREAKING: St. Louis City Passes Resolution to Divest from Corporations Complicit in Human Rights Violations In a 10-1-3 vote, St. Louis becomes the largest city in the U.S. to pass ethical investment resolution ST. LOUIS, MO — This morning, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen passed a groundbreaking resolution, “Ensuring Ethical Investment of City Retirement Funds,” ensuring that city retirement investments align with St. Louis’s commitment to human rights, racial justice, and peace. Backed by the grassroots coalition Not Another Nickel, the resolution was sponsored by Alderman Rasheen Aldridge and co-sponsored by President Megan Green, Alderwoman Alisha Sonnier, and Alderman Shane Cohn. The measure calls on the Board of Trustees of the Employees Retirement System of the City of St. Louis to divest from any companies that profit from—or are complicit in—human rights abuses, including war, occupation, apartheid, or systemic racism. It also directs the city to ensure all investments meet the ethical guidelines established by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). With this vote, St. Louis becomes the largest city in the United States to adopt a divestment resolution of this kind. The decision comes amid a national wave for justice and ethical governance during this election week.
