I'm nine months out from surgery (and hardware placement) for a tri-malleolar ankle fracture -- the result of tripping on a raised sidewalk and slipping on ice. Physical healing is progressing well, but I can't shake the anxiety of falling on ice. I miss being bold about walking outside in winter.

A friend drove two hours today for her breast cancer chemotherapy only to learn it was canceled due to NIH cuts. Clinical trial ended midstream. No treatment, no restart, no plan, no information. Her bro-in-law's chemo was also canceled.

It's March and I have what basketball commentators would call a "season-ending ankle injury." Now I am hinged back together after surgery, plotting my all-important next moves. Was reminded many times this week that science and medicine absolutely rock and we must protect them.
