Dick Waterman is praised for documenting and bringing Black blues musicians to a White audience.

We'd all be better if we had lived in a country where tomorrow a retrospective of Waterman's photographs could be displayed next to the Black contemporary photographers of his time. We don't and can't.

Feels older than it is, Robb Elementary massacre in Uvalde killing 19 was 5/24/22.

Cruz's response to why this only happens in America is still GOP 101, “I’m sorry you think American exceptionalism is awful. You’ve got your political agenda.”

We'd all prefer not being exceptional at mass murder.

@washingtonpost.com w/ more "urban" panic, focuses on only one of many causes cited:

"has been struggling for a number of years... perils and violence...inflation, the decrease in consumer spending and the demise of retail across the world.”

Do better
Shop that inspired ‘Toy Story’ is closing, citing ‘perils’ of San Francisco
Jeffrey’s Toys, one of the latest stores to leave downtown San Francisco recently, blamed inflation, decreased retail spending and violence in the area.

(1/8) TLDR; folks trying to figure out AI regulations need to study/learn from post-1949 Cold War scholarship far more than anything else.

While not completely new ground on N. Korea, if you haven't seen Madeleine Gavin's "Beyond Utopia", it's currently streaming free on PBS.

As more of America falls in love with strong-man authoritarianism, the spotlight it shines on the necessary groupthink sometimes feels scarily too close to home.

Just caught episode 9 of this season of Fargo.

The stream of neckbearded gun nuts rolling onto the ranch to the tune of Village People’s YMCA might be the most brilliant commentary on the loser militia movement in modern media history. Whole season is great, but just that 30 seconds is must watch.

Today’s incessant media circus supporting transphobia is like a really shitty shot-for-shot remake of 1980s satanic panic.

Media folks seem to be incapable of learning the lesson that "gotta be first” amplifying poorly sourced and referenced bullshit leads to real-world harms.

these guys are basically old-timey racists. "black people are only qualified for menial labor and if you see them in any other position they do not belong."
Idk, not sure Tesla would be my go-to if I was trying to make the case that only racists can be relied on to make safe equipment

Not that you should rely on an LLM for legal summaries, but I got the following very interesting responses from Bard re Alexander v South Carolina NAACP:
g.co/bard/share/4...
and g.co/bard/share/1...

Bard, is it about the ADA or redistricting? Ask an LLM and you may never know 🤷 (it's the latter)

Sad that Spotify canceled the last show w/ listeners from their Gimlet buyout, Heavyweight. I really liked that one. Don’t think I understand capitalism. Spotify bought Gimlet and then just canceled everything. Sounds like it would’ve been cheaper to just not buy it at all. Must be why I’m not rich.

I'm as bad at BlueSky as the old site, but will try & put good info out still:

If you're dealing w/ book ban BS in your district send around Kelly Gallagher's "Readicide...". Include a copy to whoever is leading the BS.

Change in POV w/ teachers and the results w/ kids I've seen just amazing.

If you forgot slavery is still legal in the USA (hello 13th amendment part people gloss over) there’s a pretty good story in the @washingtonpost.com covering new Alabama class-action suit over human rights abuses heaped on inmates “leased” out to companies you likely know and love as cheap labor.

Losing SO much knowledge about our own communities. Been doing some legislative research and going through bunch of newspapers from 1960s-80s. The sheer number of stories in the Times-Picayune (with lots of different bylines even!) on the smallest acts of local government versus today is depressing.
What’s really sad about the news industry right now is that some outlets barely have enough people to cover City Hall while others can throw a dozen reporters at a story about the Ivy League.

A Louisiana appeals court has ruled that a new election needs to be called for Caddo Parish sheriff.

A Black Democrat won the election over a white Republican by one vote this fall. A recount affirmed that result, but the Republican candidate has sued.

New Orleans is my home. Like any lifelong love we fight, we're fam, just want to make sure things getting better.

Only time I feel shame for this city is walking by John Minor Wisdom building: how blind and contemptuous the men inside of it are of the amazing people just outside.

Shame on them.
