Oakland Budget Focus: Unusual Two Days of Council Meetings Will Introduce Far-Reaching Legislation This Week
An unusual double header of Monday and Tuesday City Council meetings will introduce wide-ranging legislation focused on budget-balancing, mayoral and council vacancies, and proposed parcel and sales taxes this week. Council will deliberate on several time-sensitive legislative items on both days. Some of those must be passed by the 17th;

It's more insidious when you look at the pernicious effect of police unions constantly pulling media levers, paid and coerced, to scare the public into ever higher police budgets---so they can keep doing it.
A damning new report finds San Francisco Police Department overtime wasteful, potentially fraudulent, cops are calling in sick to go work private security jobs, and all this spending has little impact on crime.

SFPD overtime: Waste, potential fraud and little impact on crime
A city audit chastises police for lax oversight and profligate spending often for special downtown initiatives at the expense of district stations.

One cool thing if you’re in California - the state maintains a vaccination database and you can check your records. The record output tells your vaccinations that you seem to be missing.

I’m dead serious about this: between now and the commencement of the next congress, if you’ve got insurance or the spare cash, you and your family should be turning yourself into human pincushions: COVID, flu, TDAP, MMR, Polio, mpox, pneumonia. CVS has walk-in appointments for damn near everything.
If you’re old like me and not 100% sure you had chickenpox as a kid, get a blood test. You do not want it as an adult.

The story of Jan 6 is like this now. Trump supporters throw out several different and sometimes contradictory explanations: that it was a just cause, that it wasn’t a big deal, that the FBI did it. The point isn’t to convince but to sow doubt in the truth… of an insurrection attempt incited by lies.

I worked hard to prevent this (in my opinion) nonsensical recall that was based on a mountain of false narratives.

But here we are. Let's do our best to hold on to as much of the reform DA Price achieved during her short term.
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors adopted a new process for the selection of the DA this week. We've summarized the process into this table. For more info on the process, visit: bos.acgov.org/wp-content/u...

Ugh. Just experienced my first lock down. At an elementary school in East Oakland. I was there to tutor a second grader, which I didn't get to do because of the lockdown (she hadn't been pulled out of class yet), but I witnessed a fourth grade classroom during lockdown.

U.S. officials can withhold their rationale in family separation cases that relate to national security. There have been about 80 children separated for these reasons this year, with an estimated 50 of them Russian.

This is such a great point! We don't ask highways to fund themselves.
Note that we do not ask highways to meet tollbox recovery rates, we expand highways to meet demand using income, property, and sales taxes regardless of toll revenue collected

The sick leave practice, calling out sick on a certain day so another officer can get overtime and then getting overtime to fill in another officers sick leave on a sick day.

Sounds like that might be what is happening in Oakland as well. What a scam. What are they doing? It's a small percentage.
SFPD overtime has more than doubled to $108M, according to a city audit released this morning.

Officers routinely blow through overtime limits, the audit found, w/little consequence, & SFPD has poor controls in place to stop abuse.
