So happy that my article about the origins and first decades of the Atlanta Police is finally out!
It traces the institutional development of the department, the discourses of Black criminality that underlaid racist policing, and protest against the police.

Skrmetti Beyond Scrutiny - Harvard Law Review
In United States v. Skrmetti, the Supreme Court upheld Tennessee Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), a state law that prohibits transgender minors from accessing gender-affirming care.

Geo group has been fighting this lawsuit for 11 years but this is the first time they’ve got it to the Supreme Court. The derivative sovereign immunity claim is super weak imo
Today the Supreme Court heard a very, very technical case about whether a government contractors (in this case, private prison company GEO Group) should get essentially qualified immunity for contractors (I'm oversimplifying). The answer, it seems, will be no.

just saying if one of the 8 folding Dems wants they can use this as an excuse to change their mind and not give Trump exactly what he wants
Buried inside the deal to reopen government is a provision that would give Senators private right of action to sue for millions in damages over their phone records being analyzed by Jack Smith's team.

This allows Trump (via DOJ) to use taxpayer money to bribe eight GOP Senators. It's that simple, there's no other way to describe it.
And where's the compensation for people injured by the Trump admin's unlawful conduct through DHS & DOGE?
Take a bow, @schumer.senate.gov, you did this.

NEW: Dems easily flipped the sheriff's office in Pennsylvania's Bucks County, a big swing county in the Philly suburbs.
So? The incumbent GOP sheriff had contracted with ICE. His Dem challenger promised to end the contract.
Now he wants other swing-state Dems to look at his victory as a lesson:

A populous, swing county replaced its GOP sheriff on Tuesday after months of controversy over his joining ICE’s 287(g) program. The Democratic winner promises he’ll end the contract.

Whoa -- Sen. Durbin went to up Leader Thune during the vote last night to tell him that on the shutdown vote and ACA promise that "8 of us are sticking our neck out that you're going to keep your word. I hope you will. He said 'I assure you I will,'" Durbin says just now

Remember: when you leave an angry voicemail for your senator, make sure you include a message to the intern listening to the message. Something like "you think this internship will be good for your career, but it won't be because the senator will soon resign in disgrace"

I am shockingly happy with @senatorhick.govpeeps.us really highlights how scummy this crew is.
Under Schumer's leadership, eight Democrats (Cortez Masto, Durbin, Fetterman, Hassan, Kaine, King, Rosen, & Shaheen) joined the Republicans in moving forward a bill to reopen the government without ACA subsidies—Dems' stated key aim—or any other real concessions from the status before the shutdown.

It's been 10 years since Trump emerged and it's absurd to see Democratic legislators still believe "this time the Republicans will engage rationally."
We compare it to Lucy holding the football, but the better comparison is Dem QAnon: An entirely delusional belief that flatters the believer.

if the Democrats are willing to accept this deal, in particular, i don't think a single Senator should make it through their primary. this just makes health inequity worse and lets Trump send out checks with his name on them!

If Donald Trump causes my in-laws to get stuck here on their visit, I will finally leave the Republican Party
FEDWATCH: “.. The chaos is escalating, with 3,800 flight cancellations since Thursday, and some states reporting a 40- to 60% increase in visits to food banks. Some of the disruption is evident in private sector weekly economic indicators .. and even the price of electricity.”

I taught a class on suburbanization last week, and the students read some of Crabgrass Frontier. I make sure to mention the inflation-adjusted prices of all the housing developments they read about, which is always met with a shocked groan.
Definitely agree, but at the same time a brand new house in Levittown, Long Island in 1947 cost about $100k adjusted for inflation.
