Hedge-fund vampires like Alden Global Capital are killing off local news bit by bit. I stand with my former colleagues at the @chicagotribune.com, and hope everyone from regular readers to wealthy people of good conscience recognize the importance institutions like the Tribune play in our democracy.
Today, @chicagotribune.com laid off five guild staff members in a roughly 10% cut to our newsroom. These layoffs underscore a sad but unsurprising failure of leadership by Alden Global Capital, our hedge fund owner, and local management.
