This is a sad but interesting question. How many grad students will leave and where, if anywhere will they go ?
Live here and am in grad school here. I have one class where 13 out of the 15 in it are leaving the state or country at end of semester.

That funding loss will really impact the summer where the population is half that so it’s about $2k per person.

Watch seismic waves from the M7.7 earthquake in Myanmar ripple across North America.

This animation, called a Ground Motion Visualization (GMV), shows how the ground moved as detected by seismometers across the continent.

⚒️ This looks bad, bad, bad: moment magnitude of 7.7 earthquake near Mandalay, Myanmar (95.9°E, 22.0°N), at a depth of 10 km.

Strong inland shaking in a heavily populated area - USGS PAGER alert level is RED. Following thread compiles useful information from reliables sources I have seen on here.

The M7.7 Myanmar earthquake occurred on the Sagaing Fault. This right-lateral strike-slip fault is one of the major faults that defines the plate boundary between the Indian and Sunda plates.

This is a shallow earthquake very close to dense population centers.

Can I predict an earthquake? Sure!

There will be an earthquake in California today.

But this isn’t meaningful because there are earthquakes in CA EVERY DAY.

For an earthquake prediction to be meaningful, it has to specify a time, location, & magnitude that is unlikely to occur randomly. 1/ 🧪

Finally back home from the Tampa Bay area. I'm mad that I wasn't able to bring a shovel and sieve with me. Not the less some good finds from the Plio-Pleistocene sediment.

Have you ever heard of a limnic eruption? Probably not, since only a few have occurred in recorded history. Here is a thread on one of the wildest natural disasters that almost never happen, and the “invisible tsunami” that claimed over 1,700 lives in the middle of the night, without a sound. 1/10🧵

Amethyst my birthstone! Amethyst get their color from iron impurities and being exposed to radiation gets the purple color. This radiation comes from the Earth itself. #Geology #Blacksky #Rockhound

Smokey Quartz is next on our list. Smokey quartz has aluminum impurities. Those impurities are being exposed to radiation which why it has that color. This radiation can come from the decay of minerals. Smokey quartz did have the use of sunglasses in ancient China. #Blacksky #Geology #Rockhound
