Finally back home from the Tampa Bay area. I'm mad that I wasn't able to bring a shovel and sieve with me. Not the less some good finds from the Plio-Pleistocene sediment.

Amethyst my birthstone! Amethyst get their color from iron impurities and being exposed to radiation gets the purple color. This radiation comes from the Earth itself. #Geology #Blacksky #Rockhound

Smokey Quartz is next on our list. Smokey quartz has aluminum impurities. Those impurities are being exposed to radiation which why it has that color. This radiation can come from the decay of minerals. Smokey quartz did have the use of sunglasses in ancient China. #Blacksky #Geology #Rockhound

Blue quartz. A rare type of quartz only found in a limited locations. Blue quartz gets its color due to extremely tiny rutile needles inside and indicates its form in high temperatures environment.

Rose quartz is next on our list. Well know for its pink color. Rose quartz gets in color because of fibers of an aluminum-boron silicate mineral, not titanium.

Officially dubbing this week quartz week. Every day Im posting a variety of types of Quartz. With that being said let's start with clear/milky quartz. Commonly found everywhere with little to no impurities. Common uses are to make glass, microchips, and to find economic minerals.

Hematite from Graves Mountain GA. About 700 Millions Years ago this area was a volcanic island. The rainbow color comes from a thin coating of sulfur covering the hematite.

I love this rock right here. A perfect example of going through the whole rock cycle. This spinel is from Mogok Burma. The spinel came the deep parts of the mantle, erupted out. Weather from the igneous rock, deposited where limestone form, then due to metamorphism turn in marble.

If you head South Park Mall in Charlotte NC the flooring is made of fossiliferous limestones likely quarried from the Franconian Region of southern Germany. The limestone was deposited ~160 million years ago, during the Late Jurassic. Love urban geology #Geology #Paleontology #Blacksky #Rockhound

Another day, another mineral. This apophyllite from JALGAON MINES
INDIA. Mainly used for jewelry, there are some thoughts about using this mineral to help remove zinc from acid mine drainage.

Making my return from break with a beautiful specimen of Vanadinite from MIBLADEN, MOROCCO. Commonly use to make car parts and jet engines. This mineral is toxic since it contains lead.
