I generally keep them to teach. If not sell them sometimes or give out my waste rocks to K-12 students when I do school visits

No you are right. I don't have any books to recommend expect your regional mineral guide. I prefer to use Mindat.org since its free online guide and general has pictures, the localities, and other important information for a geologist for a lot of minerals.

That is emerald. The hard part is trying to find the locality of it based on the off the matrix.
