Just submitted my story for the 3rd round of @nycmidnight.bsky.social #ShortStoryChallenge2025

How stress. I was in the group that was assigned the comedy genre - a genre that is hard to write into text, especially with a 48-hour time limit. Fingers crossed that I was funny enough!

I'm 12 years late to the party, but I watched 'Her' (2013) last night. What an outstanding movie with a beautiful performance from Joaquin Phoenix - and the theme is only more poignant with the passage of time and continued evolutions in generative AI tech.

If a short fiction outlet can't respond to your submission in 1 month (2 max, if your story was 2nd-rounded) then they should accept simultaneous submissions, because otherwise they're just holding stories hostage.

I've had prescient stories become merely relevant waiting for a 9-month rejection.

Deleted my Twitter. Never posted on it anyway. Not even sure who even uses the platform anymore, beside the sycophantic Muskonites and the legion of bots who interface by cycling stolen content from all corners of the internet.

Entry successfully submitted for the first round of the @nycmidnight.bsky.social short story contest last night. The prompt had me stuck for a couple days, but it flowed easily once I finally settled on a character I liked.

Now, just to wait for two months for the results...

MONDAY — It’s #2025Pit

Are you an unagented writer who has completed a manuscript?

Are you in search of a literary agent?

Great, on Monday I’m hosting a pitch event here on BlueSky I hope will connect authors & agents who may like to work together.

How does this work? Glad you asked!

Stress is poison to creativity
"Things might be tough but it's great for artists! They'll create more!" You might not believe me but going through a lifetime's worth of stress Every Single Week for years and years- is actually not the optimal set of circumstances that inspires artists to create

Decided to have a crack at the NYC Midnight Short Story Challenge this year. Giving me something to do, I suppose!

Got my prompts, now thinking up ideas...

The mental gymnastics Musk defenders are employing to wash over his Nazi salute - it's boggling.

Aspiring to his level of wealth somehow deludes them into thinking that they aren't just another body for him and his fellow oligarchs to exploit.

As the U.S. shifts into a volatile political landscape targeting critical thinking, I want to share an important reminder to the #booksky community:

The only way to preserve literature is by collecting physical copies.

I know, Kindle users, it sucks—but your digital copy can be deleted any time.

Reminder that you're not helping anyone by watching a vile man celebrate his inauguration tomorrow.

If you're free tomorrow, your time would be better spent at a food pantry, or supporting friends in need, or working on art you're passionate about, or doing basically anything else.

Dog walked. Coffee made. Time to do some editing.

Might even be brave and try submitting a story, who knows?

Today, I finished the first draft of my little dystopian anti-capitalist short story.

It's good to be building momentum. After giving it a few edits, I might see if I can get it published. It's long overdue that I actually started trying to get my creations out into the world.

Life is short, and one of the only things that matters in it is making art. The other is loving and being loved.
Hey, you know that piece of art you're constantly thinking about making? The one that consumes your thoughts and is as rich to you as real life? The one you sigh about and say "eh, someday"?

Just fucking make it. Today is as good as any. It's even better than tomorrow.

I'm enjoying writing this short story. It's helping me get back into the rhythm after a month of 'grizzly bear hibernation mode' (i.e. Christmas).

It's a little sci-fi tale about later-than-late-stage capitalism, because of course.

Excited to try and get something published this year!

Even though the sun is out, it nevertheless remains a bleak and freezing cold day in January.

Perfect weather for hibernating indoors and writing.

Almost finished my playthrough of The Witcher 3 + DLCs, seven years after my last run. Still an incredible game, but I am feeling some game fatigue towards the closing hours of Blood and Wine's main quest.

Hearts of Stone remains one of the best, and most tragic, storylines I've enjoyed in gaming.
