Yesterday my partner and I counted all the ads along Chicago's Brown Line for "Friend," a company selling an AI chatbot pendant, and tallied how many of those ads were defaced.
Still working on a longer piece on this, but here's the quick and dirty: we counted 104 "Friend" ads total, 42 defaced.

This actually makes perfect sense if you chalk up the amount of important NPCs per game.

I don't think a videogame's narrative should be treated like a pokedex of lore.
I actually read the FF7 Remake tie in novel, and let me tell you; most of Tifa's upper body being rebuilt following the Nibelheim incident by an incel doctor who wanted to keep her in debt slavery? Not at all relevant.

After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.

Weird feelings knowing MS owns 70% of this entire list, albeit largely after the fact. It really does speak volumes about how much the 360's success was localized to the US, as big as it was. It's no wonder it struggled in certain other markets with such a dearth in genre variety. A literal desert.
