It's not just #NIH. It's not just #NSF. It's not just #NASA.

The whole scientific community has to make clear that all science across fed agencies is being destroyed in the US.

We can't just ask for our particular piece of the pie. The whole pie is being thrown out - saving your bit won't work.

A US judge has ordered hundreds of terminated research projects at the US National Institutes of Health to be reinstated, calling the processes that led to their cancellation “bereft of reasoning”.

Judge rules against NIH grant cuts — and calls them discriminatory
The decision means that the US biomedical agency has to restore funding to hundreds of research projects, but the government will likely appeal.

I just signed the public support letter for these NIH scientists. They are speaking up against a very large political current moving against them, and they need as much vocal support as is possible to garner.
(5/5)

🚨 It’s time to flood the zone.

NIH scientists just took a huge risk speaking out. Now it’s our turn.

For those with despair about today's extreme proposed funding cuts for NIH, NSF, NASA, NOAA, etc... remember:

CONGRESS 👏 SETS 👏 BUDGET 👏 LEVELS

Today's news is simply just the President's **request**.

Tell your elected representatives to REJECT this assault on science and scientific training.
NIH was the most extreme:

Trump in 2017: "Please cut NIH's budget by -22%" (yellow bars below)

Republican House: "Nah health research is important...let's increase it by +3%!"

Republican Senate: "How about +6%??"

Final Congress: "Actually...let's do +9%!!"

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants

the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever

they aren’t going into universities’ endowments

they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research
There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy

Harvard & others must counter this quickly

The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value

Still fuming about that press conference. The way RFK Jr. talks about autism is not just scientifically wrong—it’s deeply offensive.

Calling autistic kids "damaged" or implying they’ve been "lost" or "stolen" doesn’t just spread misinformation—it dehumanizes real people.

Great thread here for jr. faculty navigating the tenure process in "these times." Document all your successes and make sure your chair/PTR committee knows about them too. Show how you are doing what you can to stay research-active.
While this sounds awful here is some advice - and just my 2 cents worth. As a younger PI make sure any of your successes are seen by your colleagues. Even if it isn't your style, if you can get a blurb on the departmental or University website about your publication - make that happen. /7
