Some thoughts on the CR/minibus.

1 The Dems negotiating with Rs were not freelancing. They coordinated with Sen Schumer. A few were ready to give in on day one, others worked to maximize appropriations wins.

Those voting for the 'deal' are the ones furthest away from electoral consequences.

it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions

"Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"

Same here, but I would use the same money to say "these guys are freaks and thieves, and no one is safe while they're in charge. Not your kids, not your folks, not your friends down the street, nobody." If someone asked about any of the rest, I'd just say "NOT SAFE WITH THESE PEOPLE" and move on.

i don’t think you can maximin vote share with polls and spreadsheets, and i think it is a problem that the most prominent and influential political commentators right now are more devotees of data than experts in narrative

Chris Murphy: "Republicans are boycotting negotiations to reopen the govt bc they're desperate to raise premiums on people by 75% in order to finance their tax cut for the wealthy. The other reason House isn't in town? They're about to have enough votes to mandate the release of the Epstein files."

Me thinking the shut down could easily last three months is me think too small.
What if Johnson just never reconvenes the House?
No Congress?

Republicans have the House, Senate, and White House. When the government shuts down they will own it completely. They refuse to negotiate, and they're terrified to pass anything because their policies are a disaster.

Schumer and Thune are in a shutdown stalemate
Any chance of avoiding a shutdown next week would probably be helped if the Senate’s top two party leaders talked to each other.

It's wild to me how ostensibly smart people cannot/could not/will not see what is so obvious.

@mmasnick.bsky.social nails it. And my hunch is we'd be a better society if the Very Serious People with the Very Serious Ideas opened their fucking eyes.

Federal Judges Are Done Playing Nice: NBC Reports Full-Scale Revolt Against SCOTUS Shadow Docket Bullshit
Last week, we wrote about two federal judges who were clearly fed up with the Supreme Court's shadow docket nonsense—one sarcastically "apologizing" to Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, the other flat-out calling their approach "Calvinball." Turns out those weren't isolated incidents. They were canaries in the coal mine. Soon after that, NBC News dropped a remarkable report revealing that federal judges across the country—appointed by both Democratic and Republican presidents, including Trump—are openly criticizing the Supreme Court's handling of emergency cases.
