Today I presented at the #SRA-E Benelux meeting on #transformational impacts of large environmental shocks on #regional #economies. Thank you for the nice questions, comments, and the inspiring sessions!

Interested in #TippingPoints in social simulation? Check out our poster (with @jakkerman.bsky.social and @tatianafilatova.bsky.social ) today at #ssc2025. We propose a procedure for how to detect tipping in (social) simulation data.

✍️I visited British Steel last week - just as workers were discovering that the plant's Chinese owners were effectively planning to starve the blast furnaces to death.
It was a strange, unsettling experience. With deep ramifications. Some thoughts: edconway.substack.com/p/the-strang...

Fresh off the printing press, @sof14g1l.bsky.social, @thorid.bsky.social, @jakkerman.bsky.social and @tatianafilatova.bsky.social investigate barriers and drivers of #Climate adaptation through a literature review using #NLP algorithms, as part of our VIDI project on social tipping points. Congrats!
🚨Publication alert!

In this work, @sc3team.bsky.social used #NLP algorithms to provide insights into the barriers and drivers of adaptation to #floods and #SLR. We show that the interplay between individuals, communities, and governments is key for effective adaptation action.

@jakkerman.bsky.social is a PhD candidate researching the economic and financial dynamics arising from increasing climate hazards. He examines how societies adapt to these risks and investigates the endogenous processes that can lead to nonlinear outcomes, such as lock-ins and tipping points.

Rich countries don't want to repay low-income countries for adaptation.

But remember that climate impacts for the average citizen of a low-income country at 1.5°C of global warming won't be felt by ~40% of people living in high-income countries until >3°C. That is climate injustice. #COP29

Another sobering article again highlighting the obvious:

Our communities are largely not built to withstand marginally intense, let alone anomalously intense, weather events.

Building better and smarter won't reduce risk to zero, but you're giving yourself a much better chance to limit impacts.
