Yes. “People are doing things. You will meet them when YOU start doing things.”

Lots of information and resources in this one.

Been secretly brewing a new art gallery in downtown Minneapolis. Excited to announce that it will open to the public Feb 12th! Tickets to opening are limited and unfortunately already sold out.

today's "do something useful despite social anxiety" action - gave money to Resistbot so I can pelt Klobuchar and Smith's offices with faxes or snailmail, and not constantly feel dread at the idea of cold phone calls. will any of it work? who the fuck knows, but at least I'm saying something.

If anyone wants/needs an easy way to send a message to your representatives about the freeze to biomedical research funding, the Association of American Cancer Institutes has a good template that can be automatically sent to your specific reps from their website. www.votervoice.net/AACI/campaig...
Write to Congress to Oppose Federal Funding Freezes
The recent freezes to federal funding have created uncertainty for the nation's cancer centers and medical research institutions. Please share your concerns with your congressional delegation and urge...

A reminder that people who are not your specific brand of online don't know the things you do. I just introduced my boss, who is apparently an active Redditor, to 5 Calls, because she'd never heard of it. Spreading the word about helpful things you know is another very good way to help right now.

Would love to understand why every Democrat is not out there every second of the day explaining in plain English that Donald Trump has declared war on cancer patients.
From a source inside the National Cancer Institute:

“Everyone is scrambling to figure out how we’re supposed to work to serve the public when we can’t engage at all.”

Y’all. Please. I have muted the names Dear Leader and his groupies, but their photos keep showing up cause y’all ain’t using alt text 😭
Friends, I am BEGGING YOU to a) use alt text on all images in order to make them accessible to everyone and b) label the images of current political numbskulls with their names so the images are picked up by mute lists.

Well, today was a shitty end to a low motivation week. I need to think about better SAD coping mechanisms this weekend. I between Dragon Age obsessing, of course.

I'm making my way through Tamsin's game and actually seriously thinking about writing something for her, so here, have a picture of her. Because.

i get why folks like to rate and rank game changer episodes, but for what it's worth, i don't like thinking about the series that way!! i like thinking about it a ~portfolio~ of evidence that will one day lead to my arrest

I had to look up to see which was first, but the Challenger explosion was first, followed by the Baby Jessica in the well story.
What’s the first major news story your remember as a child?

Mine is OJ Simpson

Tbh I think it's important to get a little bit invested in your friends' ships even if you don't share them because they can help you appreciate aspects of characters you wouldn't necessarily arrive at from an outside perspective

Since I've seen like 3 different comments this week, reminder that the problem with "admin costs" in health care is more "too many execs and shareholders" and not "there are a shit ton of people who make your health care possible other than doctors and nurses and they all deserve to get paid too."

I am anti-murder. I am not surprised when someone who commits murder doesn’t share my values.

So it is no shock to me that United Health continues to not share my values.

I didn’t expect the other guy would, either, but United has a higher death toll.

Indie devs and a major game storefront losing revenue because Funko used an AI tool to confuse a domain registrar that has no appeals process is a very 2024 enshittification stew
itch.io itch.io @itch.io · Dec 9
I kid you not, @itch.io has been taken down by Funko of "Funko Pop" because they use some trash "AI Powered" Brand Protection Software called Brand Shield that created some bogus Phishing report to our registrar, iwantmyname, who ignored our response and just disabled the domain

USENET wasn't a VC-funded corporate entity relying on engagement to move its way toward profitability.

(Bluesky is a VC-funded public benefit company trying to find its way toward profitability; also, in 2024, maybe non-algorithmic feeds and federation are potentially profitable differentiators.)
I’ve been online long enough to remember USENET and “don’t feed the trolls” and could never for the life of me figure out why Twitter didn’t operate under that same philosophy. Too much troll-feeding happened on there.

It was truly something to be a teenager & early adult between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the World Trade Center. That’s not just a nostalgic idealization of youth; we were in a moment that’s impossible to explain now.
I just want to be in middle school and play the Sega dreamcast for the first time again, instead of wondering if I'm going to be forced to live under authoritarianism.

Sometimes you just get to a point of "I believe wholeheartedly in media criticism but also that's my emotional support piece of media and I have zero interest in knowing anything about the criticism right now."

My favorite comparison when people harp on the repetitiveness of romance novels or holiday movies or whatever is to ask why they would watch a sporting event more than once. “I thought you’d already seen one, though? Aren’t they all mostly the same? Doesn’t it just get boring for you after awhile?”
Yes, internet person. You are the first person to quip about the similarities you have noticed among Hallmark movies. You definitely made quite a discovery there.

Please stuff a candy cane in your mouth, just for a little while.
