Light from supernova 1987A reached Earth #OTD in 1987.

The Hubble space telescope captured this spectacular image for the 30 year anniversary in 2017. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

Supernova 1987A is located in the centre of the image amidst a backdrop of red, blue, and orange stars. A bright pink and red ring around the central region of the exploded star is composed of material ejected by the star about 20 000 years before the actual explosion took place. The supernova is surrounded by red and orange gaseous clouds. The color of these clouds represents the glow of hydrogen gas.

This #NASAWebb image of Supernova 1987A shows the structures created before and after the explosion. The keyhole was formed from ejected material afterward, while the equatorial ring was made from material ejected thousands of years beforehand: bit.ly/482PSxW 🔭 🧪

Once again: DST doesn’t solve the problem of going to/from work in the dark.

Instead, when days get shorter in the fall, we should just shorten the workday by an hour.

Then in spring, when we start getting more daylight again, we can shorten the workday by another hour.

Bristol pubs just built different

Have been quiet on here for a while, mainly recovering from finishing my MSc degree… so feels like a great time to post the most chaotic plots I managed to (accidentally) make while doing it

Starting off strong with the oops!all contours plot
What was meant to be a clear, legible plot is just about visible in the background, but it is mostly covered in black elliptical contour lines, getting thicker towards the centre so that the middle is almost obscured completely. It’s made worse by the addition of numbers scattered around the plot, following the contour lines and varying from one decimal place to fourteen (really not sure how that happened). To top it all off, adjacent to the centre the lines have formed what looks like two staring eyes, and if you stare too long there is also an ominous smile at the bottom.

The Ring Nebula (M57) is more complicated than it appears through a small telescope. The easily visible central ring is about one light-year across, but this remarkably deep exposure - a collaborative effort combining data from three different large telescopes - explores the looping filaments of glowing gas extending much farther from the nebula's central star. This composite image includes red light emitted by hydrogen as well as visible and infrared light. The Ring Nebula is an elongated planetary nebula, a type of nebula created when a Sun-like star evolves to throw off its outer atmosphere and become a white dwarf star.
