The Earldom of Bastet is overrun by cats. 🐾
The goddess of the same name protects them, making them magical creatures. Alongside domesticated felines, the rural area of her domain boasts cheetahs, leopards, and lions.

Most people in the kingdom describe the desert oasis of Bastet as paradise.

Aldous grabbed the neck and pommel of the mace and twisted. A sharp crack echoed through the trees as the statue’s wrist snapped clean. The weapon came free with less resistance than he expected, as it was heavier than it looked. The severed hand still clung to the grip. Grimacing, Aldous took his hammer and began smashing the stone fingers one by one until they broke loose. Once the mace was free, he placed it carefully on the ground and turned back toward the statue. He lifted the poor soldier. He tried to be gentle, but his arms ached under the weight. He laid the petrified body down in the nettles, face tilted toward the trees. Once, this man had walked. Had fought. Had believed he could win. He hadn’t. Aldous briefly wondered what possessed him to try his luck in the forest. Now, he was just another warning along the path.

Aldous comes from Ventus, which is known for having the largest animals in the world. Mammoths are the biggest land creatures (that the kingdom knows of 😏), and the whalers bring back far larger beasts from the sea.

So if Aldous sees signs of something massive living in the forest, he’d know.

Aldous is an immigrant who tries to fit in, but everything about him and even the horse he rides on makes him stand out.

Heiden loves to stand out. The first thing everyone notices about her is the large grey fur lined pelisse she wears over her shoulder to signify she was an outrider.

She lay awake far longer than she meant to. After changing into a linen chemise, she settled into the bed, but sleep refused to take her. The waning moon hung low in the sky. Heiden had always thought it most beautiful just before Mani swallowed it whole. The bed was angled perfectly to watch it, yet the crooked windowpane bent the light just enough to irritate her. Not that the warped glass was the problem. Aldous had a life here. In the forest, it was just the two of them, cut off from Volla. He’d claimed nothing was keeping him here, and she’d believed him. But now that he was back, there was more to him than even he seemed to understand. He had roots here. History. Ties to people who mattered to him. To Marianne. To Isa. And if he managed to deal with the demon, he could stay and have everything he wanted. The thought left a slow, unwelcome knot in her gut. Like their time together was ending, no matter what she did.

No, he did not just say that. Maybe he had a bit of an ego now. No matter how much she wanted it, she wasn’t taking orders. Still… she did want it. So she gave him a chance. “Appreciate the initiative, Killer… but you wanna rephrase that as a request?” “Sorry. How about this? Do this one little thing for me, and I’ll make sure my mouth is too busy to say anything stupid.” Perfect response. No notes.

“Spend the night,” she said. “One warm bed. One meal. You could use the rest.” Aldous exhaled, glancing past her into the small cottage. The hearth glowed, casting a soft light over the stone walls. The fire’s warmth poured out the doorway. The scent of herbs and something faintly sweet hung in the air. It was too inviting. Too easy to picture himself here. Even if just for a little while. But in the morning, he’d still be a walking corpse. He shook his head. Better to leave now, before the cold reached his heart. If he stayed, leaving would only hurt more. He hadn’t crossed any lines yet that her family would see as unforgivable. And he did not want to give himself the chance to be selfish. She’d be fine. Her life would go on, and they were never going to end up together, anyway. Her relationship with her father might even mend because of this. She was going to do amazing things, he just wished he could be there to see it. “I can’t,” he said, forcing himself to step back. “I should go…”

My MC has clear reasons for her weapon choice and her fear, but I’m debating whether those explanations need to be on the page or if it’s enough that I know them. Where does one draw that line?

Day 4 of combing through my manuscript and trying to polish it as much as I can before sending it to an editor. (Actually, just waiting for payday to check budget.)

I always feel confident, but I know the second I hand it over then it instantly becomes “the worst thing anyone has ever written.” 😅

Just writing something new. I'm going back to my Dark Fantasy project soon, but I didn't realize how good it would to put down in writing one of my side ideas that I have been saving 'for later'.

I'm up to 53K on my distraction piece for Novel November. Finished the climax today, and I’ll probably have a whole first draft by the end of the week. Might tuck it away and come back to it one day, but I'm excited to get back to my main WIP.

My word of the day: extirpated.
Means a species isn’t extinct, just gone from a region.
Would be perfect for my scene, but probably too obscure to use. I don't even think the context helps. (Although it's a first draft)

“I haven’t seen one in years” will work, I guess.

Pros of writing on a web app: better focus, under-the-hood updates, writer-centric tools, autosave, revision history.

Con: the site goes down and now I’m not sure if anything I wrote this morning actually saved… and now I’m at work… panicking quietly.
