the democratic party’s basic problem is it has almost no control over how its message reaches the ears of voters, especially outside of presidential election years. but rather than devote serious time, attention and cash to that problem its consultants and pundits want to fight factional battles

one of the interesting thing i have seen in the platner discourse is a refusal to confront a thing on its own terms. to his pundit supporters, platner isn’t a novice candidate with perhaps questionable judgment to be evaluated on his ability to win, but a symbol to wield against rivals

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

i've been on about how liberals need to rediscover liberalism as a fighting creed... the same goes for bros like willis

The other day when I said that people sometimes use “Zionist” not to critique an actual ideology but as a code word for “Jew,” a lot of people on here got mad at me.

"AI 2027" argues that AI will reach roughly human level in roughly 2027. This just happens to be right about when OpenAI would expect to start to run out of money.

I argue that this is not a coincidence at all, and its predictions are all wrong.

Help a brother's need for a hilarious anecdote out
I have a date with a woman from Hinge tomorrow. We’ve been getting to know each other over text the last few days. I made the grievous mistake of telling her about my account on Bluesky and now she’s on a mission to find me.

Pray for me.

1/ Here's the thing with Slotkin mentioning Reagan: if you want Dems to be an internationalist party that defends liberal values/democracy against autocratic imperialism, you need to articulate an actual *vision* for that. And we can do better than "80s-00s neoconservatism spray painted blue."

If you have 45 minutes, watch this short, deeply moving documentary. It somehow manages to be both affirming and utterly devastating.

Heather Shaner embodies what every far-right "constitutionalist" claims to believe. Which is why they loathe her.

This, from Tim Alberta's inauspiciously timed (it's dated July 10) piece on how "Trump Is Planning for a Landslide Win," needs to be on replay on every news outlet.

This is an excellent piece about what the assumptions behind weighting can do to a poll’s results. My feeling is that it’s more likely than not that pollsters have been predominantly making similar assumptions that are going to be biased in the wrong direction.
Polling paradox: what actually shapes the numbers?
Likely voters, past voters, demographics and more – how pollsters weight 2024 election poll data matters a great deal.
