Just wilful performative cruelty that is entirely out of step with the majority of British people.

How many Labour MPs got into politics in order to vote for stealing jewellery off of people seeking refuge from war and persecution?

OK, by this logic...the surveillance of every facet of life--from comms to movement to social relationships to etc--which has become the norm over the last decades c/o the surveillance biz model, makes LE surveillance MORE possible than it's ever been in history.

But somehow e2ee is the problem?
The problem with digital speech activists’ one sided framing of this debate is that they don’t acknowledge that digital architecture has shifted what is possible. End-to-end encryption makes it impossible for law enforcement to do targeted surveillance, just as lack of it makes filtering trivial.
📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

Hi guys, did you already know there are competitions for window tinting? With better commentators than most of the tennis matches I’ve watched on ESPN? (Low bar I know)

Anyway if you need to procrastinate harder than you’ve ever procrastinated before, I got you

This is a really great thread on generative AI use.
I respect Anil so I want to talk seriously about harm reduction and public health messaging.

First let me acknowledge that yes, many regular, not-super-online people are trying out AI tools. Of course they are! It's been aggressively pushed into everything and given heavy institutional support.
this is the really ineffective head-in-the-sand reaction a lot of folks on Bluesky tend to have if you talk about any harm reduction-based approach to the reality that millions of people are using AI tools today. The current approach to critiquing AI is obviously not working, but they don't care.

Aside from how on earth this will play out in the three countries that aren't England, what I find quite weird about this is how quickly senior politicians seem to forget what everyday life is like and how to use everyday words.

Women's appearance and behaviour is about to get even more highly policed in the UK, with a few people doubtless being emboldened to "take action". This whole billionaire-funded enterprise dials back gender equity by decades.

Thinking about why public services should
not be designed in the same way as private-sector ones. I've 5 points so far:
(1) CHOICE: with v few exceptions, we get to choose the private-sector digital services we use but most public services need to be universal at the point of access

Going through the National Museum in Oslo, I came across this doorway in the modern art galleries. It stood out from the classic “white cube” gallery and hinted at some kind of immersive installation piece.

When I got closer, I saw it was by an artist I’d wanted to see for a long time: Ilya Kabakov
