Really enjoyed watching Justin Wolfers becoming ubiquitous in US media over the last six months, because most US media people don't know how to deal with him. A very good economist, who cares foremost about people, who doesn't care if he upsets power, and explains things in colloquial Australian

Of all the guys who left their wives for a half-their-age research assistant it's always *the one you least suspect* who turns up in the files about famous powerful men who palled around with the rapist and trafficker of young girls. Ain't that just the way.

AI policy debates fixate on productivity and innovation, but ignore who benefits, who loses, and who decides. Automation isn’t inevitable – it’s a choice, writes John H Howard @drjohnhoward

AI policy is stuck on productivity – and democracy is paying the price
Artificial intelligence is increasingly framed in terms of efficiency and growth. But that framing sidelines harder questions about power, choice and democratic governance.

In a time when governments need to learn, they continually demonstrate that they have learned exactly nothing. Government is about being the custodian of the well-being of 26 million people - this is not custodianship, it's incompetence bordering on negligence.
EXCLUSIVE: Funding and support plans for national disability insurance scheme participants will be generated by a computer program and staff will have no discretion to amend them, under a major overhaul of the NDIS to be rolled out next year, @australia.theguardian.com can reveal.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

By eroding trial by jury, the government is cementing its legacy as a bulldozer of our human rights.

This is the behaviour of authoritarian regimes!

The right to a jury trial is a fundamental tenet of democracy. We cannot let it be destroyed.
