"The factories, the Pückenried lowland, Peter's barn, the town, street after street, house after house. I let my agents buy the lot, let them close the businesses. Your hope has been madness, your perseverance pointless, your sacrifice a folly, your whole life wasted without use"
Baumol's cost disease in action...
Pretty much all affordability discourse could benefit from just posting this chart.
If you're in the better off America, all the luxury goods you want in excess are for the most part much cheaper. If you're in the poorer America, most of the shit you need to live/grow is more expensive.

“Buying more stuff isn’t prosperity”
Pure reactionary nostalgia paired with some kind of weird anti-modernism. What could “affordability” possibly mean if making stuff cheaper doesn’t matter?

A large share of politics coded as “left” on this site is in fact reactionary nostalgia - an inchoate belief that times were better in the good old days and nebulous forces have taken that from us.

The best pro-AI people are against corporate control of AI, and the best anti-AI people are potential allies in that fight.
We must be careful not to turn a potential ally into a definite enemy.

This and also... I do think the goal should be to move past a politic of spite, but sometimes we're spiteful little shits, and spiteful shits who throw bricks at cops for reasons of wanting someone to throw bricks at are not materially that different from those throwing bricks at cops For Love.

Wir haben das gleiche Phänomen in Europa, nur schlägt es sich aufgrund der Demographie nicht so sehr in Wahlergebnissen nieder, was es politisch uninteressant macht.
The GOP didn't find a way to incorporate these kids into their political pipeline before they got radicalized online, and now they are a constituency that represents the future of the party, and there's nothing anybody can do to undo that fact. This is a key problem with 21st century conservatism

in a twist, it turns out that with all this focus one lab figures it out - a model that's better than any human at steering humans away from suicide like a Waymo is at driving. but then the same humanists don't want to deploy it because it feels inhuman.
I do think it's reasonable to say "Chat GPT shouldn't be encouraging people to commit suicide". But imo it's unreasonable to expect technology to be able to talk people out of suicidal ideation when like, their closest human friends and family struggle at it.
This is the right question. And the answer is a lot: www.fastcompany.com/90230313/how...
The topline claim that AI is bad because some users raise issues related to self-harm with it is meaningless by itself. The issue is how it's handled, not the number of users using it to ask questions about it.

It sounds so abhorrently crazy to me that the US might bail out OpenAI whereas China might arrest the entire exec suite of one of their biggest companies during without a clear reason at every moment.

Affordability is, in fact, not a real thing. It's a buzzword designed to respond to an invented crisis. It's the Dem equivalent of the GOP saying it'll secure our border - the public got really upset about something that mostly didn't exist, and now you'll solve it. It's anti-Glonzo sloganeering.
Ironically you and Trump have the same position now. “Affordability” isn’t a real thing.

In 1983, households aged 75+ were 5% richer than the average. In 2022, they were 55% richer.
Meanwhile, under-35 households went from 21% of average wealth to just 16%.

Quel est le point commun entre mon collègue français de la gauche et Jordan Bardella?
Les deux veulent qu'une banque centrale finance la dette française
Les deux veulent qu'une banque centrale finance la dette française
Bardella wants the ECB (read: Banque de France and other Eurosystem banks) to buy an unlimited amount of French debt.
Other eurozone countries will be delighted at the opportunity to co-finance one of the most generous pension systems in Europe.

This is way closer than I’d like it to be but Charlotte appears set to unlock an absolutely massive infrastructure plan with the 1% sales tax increase with billions for public transit and roads up by just shy of 8k votes with almost all precincts in.

a good video diving into a recently released game, but what i found most interesting is that they used RL to train the AI enemies to walk instead of hand-animation. and there's plenty of other AI and automation used to make the game. yet not much pushback from the usual suspects.
