As this man has also been a member of my two all-time favourite bands, how could I feel anything less than obliged to read his memoir, pronto?
So .... I'm just starting Mike Joyce's memoir 'The Drums'. Are the chapter titles actual songs or do they just read like they are?
The demo version of Frankly Mr Shankly now on the Late Show and sounding brilliantly clear and calm.

This week's Channel 5 Play for Today was some heavy viewing for a Friday night. Enjoyed it though. Powerful performance by Sue Johnston, as you'd probably expect.

The hostile, relentless nature of England's four-pronged attack (before Stokes's introduction) was indeed reminiscent of the late 70s/early 80s Windies. I don't think that's an exaggeration.

Turned the telly on just in time to see Stokes being castled. Not a great start to my Ashes.

Strikingly similar to Braverman's "I would love to have a front page of the Telegraph with a plane taking off to Rwanda, that's my dream, it's my obsession."

It's the cruelty Olympics.
It's not just the fact that they're evil. It's not just the way they are working very hard to make 'asylum seekers' and 'illegal migrants' into interchangeable synonyms for each other. It's the glee with which they communicate these things. They take uncontainable joy in the suffering of others.

I mean I get it, there's nothing in sport that can ever match an Aguerooooo-type moment, but this year's French Open final was just too great to be so pithily dismissed. If you'd have given say, Formula One as an example, I'd have agreed totally.
Imagine being one of those people who, knowing that football exists, says they prefer sports like tennis instead. Absolute losers.

FFS, Denmark!! Never had a problem with Scotland football wise, until I found myself working there during the 1986 World Cup (coaching ping pong at Butlin's Ayr, since you ask!). The anti-English sentiment and hostility was off the scale. Ridiculous, really. Always wished them the very worst since.

Buzzcocks - 'Nothing Left' (Love Bites, 1978)
The Primitives - 'Nothing Left' (Lovely, 1988)

My fave 'same song title, different song' phenomenon. Here's the Prims performing their track for French TV in 1988.

"...City fans. I think we can agree that they're just...Man City fans are better than United fans..."

16-minute Bournemouth fan channel review of their recent trip to Manchester generally, and the Etihad specifically. Pretty fair overall, I'd say.

Shabana Mahmood is becoming so confused it's possible she'll deport herself before her tenure is over.
Shabana Mahmood asks MPs to stop mentioning Tommy Robinson's name (in relation to his support for her policies) as "he doesn't even think I am English. I find that offensive."

Every single journalist/TV presenter has a moral obligation to read Shabana Mahmood's words from 2015 back to her before even considering entering into further discourse.
2015 Shabana Mahmood really needs to have a word with 2025 Shabana Mahmood

You know, when you put it like that.......
Having opened the show with it this morning and given it some thought, I know we’re supposed to dislike Kevin in My Perfect Cousin. But he likes The Human League and University Challenge and proper Subbuteo technique. Apart from the ‘sheepie’, you’d definitely want to hang out with him

Can confirm this absolutely true. When discussing the forthcoming Marty Supreme film - which I'm very much looking forward to - with my mate earlier, I casually used the name 'Tiffany Chevrolet' and he didn't bat an eyelid.

One definition of New Wave is punk sensibility with better musicians. The Blockheads were certainly that - and Dury was a poet, not just a lyricist.

The Primitives are forty years old today. First show , Coventry, 14/11/85.
They've re-released Thru The Flowers to mark the anniversary.
And it's now sounding swell on the Late Show.

Tempted though I am, it's not quite the weather for 'The First Picture of You', so here's my 20p and let's kick the weekend off with 'Orgasm Addict', 'The Day the World Turned Day-Glo' & 'Panic'.
A bit later in the week than usual due to all the new stock that’s come in here’s this weeks fabulous 50 on the jukebox.
20p gets you 3 picks…GO

Yesterday I saw a burly builder, I'd say mid-forties, answer his 'This Charming Man' ringtoned phone. Without wishing to stereotype, it struck me how a man of his demographic would almost certainly have dismissed The Smiths as fey and effeminate forty years ago. Funny how perception changes.

There's been quite a fuss surrounding Hatful of Hollow's 41st anniversary. My own story goes like this: I bought it from Piccadilly Records, before heading to Manchester YMCA to practise table tennis with a few other full-time players of that time. It wasn't a universally popular choice.

So clear. So concise.
Christiane Amanpour, "Antisemitism is a major problem. How do you navigate that?"

Zack Polanski, "I think it is a powerful message to have a Jewish leader and a Muslim deputy leader"

"Antisemitism and Islamophobia are two sides of the same coin"

"And the best response to hatred is solidarity"

I used to play in the same football team as the lad on the receiving end of this shocking incident. It's fair to say he's milked it a bit over the years and I suppose you can't blame him. Still, it must feel strange to have a lifelong claim to fame of being a dartboard in human form.

The new Carol Morley film is currently being shot literally round the corner from our house. I'm a fan of Carol's stuff and, though I haven't read the book, really looking forward to this one.
