Tumblr user nocryptographer: I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation. A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written. AI slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence. Someone who generates their story with AI will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same. There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that. I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it. If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene... then it's real.

Hi. I'm Dana and this is the first four pages of my work-in-progress novel, Flight of the Independent Omnivessel Exocoetus.

It's sci-fi, queer, and an unapologetic mix-tape of so many things I've thought were cool since I was a kid, and still do.

I remembered having wanted to ride the lifts up here — was tonight really the first time? — and gaze out. I wanted to see the way the stars and the moon reflected on the water’s surface. I wasn't going to get my wish. The rough water and the underside of the thick rainclouds were all lit up by the dull red glow of the port city. Instead of celestial bodies, three-story tall OLED screens cycling advertisements and entire floors of overnight office workers lit up the night. I was jerked back to reality when I realized that the club's bouncer was finally waving me over. It was my turn. I was also getting rained on. I fumbled through my purse to find my ID, and then felt a flash of panic. Would he recognize my photo? Silverwise had to have realized by now that I was missing. His little tin soldiers would have pictures of me, and biometric data. Worse, they’ll have your name. But which name would they have? My citizen card had never been updated. My mother had added Silverwise to hers immediately after the wedding, but no one ever bothered to make me do the same. Only one person had my real name, and that had been a mistake. I was hesitating. I didn’t want to seem suspicious, so I quickly, with my hand shaking, offered him my wallet-sized certificate of citizenship. He wouldn’t care, I told myself. It wouldn't matter what name was on it, or that the card said ‘male.’ All he was looking 4

I’m actually super proud of this! After losing my job I set out to keep myself busy with improving myself, and decided it’s about time I knew more than one language. I know I’m far from amazing but I’m genuinely happy with my progress so far and can’t wait to see how good I can be by next year!

I'd like to say I'm disappointed, but Im really not! The writing was on the wall months and months ago when they had refused to acknowledge transphobia as one of Britain's main social issues. What a total waste of everybodys time and energy waiting for the obvious reveal of what we knew already.
