Seems trivial to say, but learning a foreign language so often illuminates my native English. Just today, by thinking how a Czech word for the 'primrose' plant (prvosenka) resembles the word for 'first' (první), I then realised that 'primrose' is likewise the 'prime-rose'.

Feeling crabby? Anneke Schwob (and several scientists) have the cure! This week on hex, "Carcinisation" is hilarious, strange, wonderful and very timely! Go read! 🦀

Here we are. #FiveYearsOn from the first day of the full British lockdown. I woke up at 5.30am today without intending to, just as I did five years ago today. On that day I stood on the front step of my flat and watched a fox saunter across the road. I was very frightened.
all the replies here are helpful and fascinating.

it is incredibly clear to me now that while it might have felt like there were good decisions to be made, really whether you had good lockdowns or horrible ones was basically down to luck.

I would really really love to hear other people's notes/strong memories about the specifics of this. I feel like we were all in such trauma that the memories have vanished fast, leaving a blanket of "oh god yuck awful" which isn't helpful for understanding how it's affected us.

I wrote up a post about how we hugely improved the write performance for Bluesky's timelines/following feed.

If you want to learn more about how we did it, check it out.

Some nuggets in there about embracing imperfection in some parts of a system to scale better.

Nearly half of the world’s habitable land is used for agriculture.

Of this global agricultural land, 80% is used for livestock, despite meat and dairy making up a much smaller share of the world's protein and calories.

If you, too, require an extra nerdy version of Ishay Ribo's Seder ha-Avoda with annotated lyrics linked to all their classical sources, I made one.

The Unbearable Darkness of Being: On Ishay Ribo's Seder ha-Avodah | Dr. Tamar Ron Marvin
Ishay Ribo's remarkable, melancholy version of the Seder ha-Avodah, the piyyut recited in the Amidah of Musaf on Yom Kippur, traces a theology of teshuvah.
