Y'all wanna warn your friends before you get on the "AI companion" bandwagon and warn your friends, help them get informed.
Now imagine sharing your private fantasies with what you believe is a bot that cannot judge or remember. Just that, on the other side, is a man in a one-room home in Nairobi, pretending to be an AI companion.

That man is Michael, and this is his story: data-workers.org/michael/
The Emotional Labor Behind AI Intimacy, by Michael Geoffrey Asia.
Imagine confiding your most private fantasies to what you believe is an unfeeling algorithm that cannot judge or remember. Now imagine that on the other side of that conversation is a man sitting in a...

i’m genuinely so convinced all of this has been a planned operation by the student and her mother (who is commenting on this publicly, and associated closely with the republican party), and big far right propaganda account going all in on it. this is designed to oust trans people from public life

You know that feeling of being trapped and kind of panicky when you don't know where the exit is? Yeah, that. To the point that being conscious of what methods I have available makes me want to use them a lot less.
It seems innocuous but people’s answers to this question are gonna keep me single by choice forever. it’s not just because of people choosing option 3, it’s my allergy to stupid hallmark sentiments in lieu of a developed personal philosophy or actually reckoning with one’s own mortality

I posted more on depth on this here regarding asexual representation vs the ever present sexless heroine in fiction.

bsky.app/profile/mori...
I used to say this on the old site and it's time to say it here:

Heroine in fiction that never has romance, never feels desire is not inherently feminist. It's not aromantic or asexual* representation.

It's just an old, tired way of creating female characters "safe" for guys to watch 1/2

Anyways, here is your reminder that the sexless warrior maiden (not to be confused with an actual asexual character), is a patriarchial male fantasy .

This absurd overestimation takes place with basically all minority groups. In 2022, Americans thought 30% of the US was gay or lesbian, 29% was bisexual & 21% was trans. They also thought 27% were Muslim, 30% were Jewish & 41% were Black.

Did you know that your city almost definitely has a deal with the phone app "Libby" where you can enter your city library number and get access to an enormous number of ebooks? This is great because if there's a day you don't want to be on social media, it gives you somewhere to sink your attention.

There might be another name for this but I think of it as the Socrates fallacy because this was basically his method -- we have a word, so let's clarify the definition so that we can correctly identify the real thing in the world that it names.

Just b/c history has given us these two words doesn't mean that speculative literature naturally falls into two distinct categories that can be correctly labeled with these words. Likewise attraction to more than one gender doesn't necessarily come in two distinct forms just b/c we have two words.

Sci-fi vs fantasy debates fall into the same fallacy as bi vs pan -- the assumption that because we have two words, there must be two real things in the world that they correspond to.
if we're discussing what sets apart sci-fi and fantasy again I get to restate the only correct answer which is 'it's extremely vibes-based and fundamentally case by case because any attempt to quantify it will see so many exceptions the definition becomes meaningless'

It appears that we are entering a vicious cycle where slop translation makes the world outside English seem ever more more inaccessible and ugly, so we want to engage it less, so there is less demand for translation, language-learning, language-crossing experience

Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.

This is how AI is killing translation work:
AI Killed My Job: Translators
Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.
