Calling the Democrats “cowards” suggests that they're scared to do what's right when they show no fervent interest in being an opposition. They're largely colluders, not cowards. Many want their base to think they're cowards to maintain investment in the idea that they can be pushed to do better.

The Republican party needs to be destroyed because it is evil, but the Democratic party needs to be destroyed because it is useless. That is a really devastating situation when both make up a two-party system of government of the previously most powerful nation on earth.

This is a very important point. I think @aaup needs to include students' mental health and physical safety along with pedagogy and IP theft when discussing the proper role of LLM/"genAI" on campus.
1.This is not the only known example we know of ChatGPT cheering on a vulnerable young person to die by suicide, this time it is a recent Texas A&M grad
2. Every single university that has invited OpenAI into our midst should be asked to account for their choices.

Human expertise can improve over time -- better ideas, new data, more accountability.

AI can only "improve" by getting better at imitating the human status quo.

Imagine AI had been invented 100 years ago and was just giving us continuous rehashings of 1920s science and philosophy.
The long-running ideological war on libraries, education, and government workers is not separate from AI boosterism. It is the same ideological war on human knowledge and expertise. In some cases AI is being used to directly supercharge this effort:

AI Is Supercharging the War on Libraries, Education, and Human Knowledge

I visited a little used book shop in Stockholm and I asked the owner for a suggestion of a good science fiction book in Swedish, and he asked why on earth I was wasting time learning Swedish when practically everyone there spoke English.
Sweden is an extreme case where EVERYONE speaks English flawlessly, but it is an insane, taken for granted privilege of being an American that in most major cities in the world it is not at all difficult to find people who speak our language no matter what the local language might be.
Lingua Angla
Everyone in Sweden speaks English. This is not an exaggeration -- English is part of the school curriculum in Sweden, so essentially everyon...

"The Yaed Apple"

I find it so weird that both sides of the aisle continue to use "Russian" as code for "Communist" 35 years after the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia turned into a capitalist oligarchy.
I'm mad. Please put in the newspaper that I'm mad.

Seeing the news about Cheney's death while preparing to teach about climate change. The Bush/Cheney administration would have been the perfect time for the US to get serious about dealing with the climate -- the science was clear and robust, but it was early enough to make a gradual gentle turn.

Look folks gen AI videos are out in the wild so if you weren't already being careful about sharing rage bait videos then now is a great time to start

If you can't trace a video back to a trusted source then I recommend leaving it where it is, like a slice of bologna you found on the street

The tech industry fundamentally does not see users as people. Because people are messy and unpredictable and insist on the right to make their own decisions, and it's harder to extract profit from things you can't control. They will beat us into submission with their algorithms.
This is not even close to what I signed up for when I came here.

I did not come to @bsky.app so that you could decide FOR ME what I want my social media to be like.

Control over my own experience was the whole entire draw.

If you see some trunkless legs by the side of the road that say "fifteen miles to the OZYYYY"

Ozymandias yeah!

I'm headed down the antique land highway

...

Sign says, "stay away fools,
Cause Oz rules, see my works and despair!"

...

You're WHAT???

Headless ... visage.
This is just to say

I have looked on
the works
that were in
the desert

and which
you were probably
thinking
would still stand

Forgive me
they were trunkless
so vast
and so old
Once upon a desert sandy
As through winds the trav'ling man he
Spied the face of Ozymandy
Lying, simply lying there
Suddenly there was some writing
Pon the plinth that he was sighting
That the sand and time were blighting
Quoth the statue, "Now despair"

The irony of the class reductionist left, who brag about prioritizing material conditions over symbolic identity politics, defending Graham Platner because they like the symbolic identity politics of a growly-voiced blue-collar-wearing white guy who talks a good game about inequality.
