"As of March, the United States had 737 billionaires with a combined net worth of about $5.5 trillion. So to foot that $1.2 trillion bill, they would each have to contribute about $1.6 billion. Amazingly enough, that investment of $1.2 trillion would pay for itself."
Heat pumps are expensive. What if billionaires bought them for everyone?
Rewiring America ran the numbers and found that a big investment in heat pumps would end up paying for itself.

What do you do when 'economic growth' is all politicians have to offer?

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said delivering economic growth is “our national mission”.

@BBCAfrica: President Ruto of Kenya has abandoned planned tax rises in response to deadly protests on Tuesday. William Ruto said huge protests had made it clear that people wanted nothing to do with the legislation. https://t.co/64MVrz6pbC

Lots of anti-imperialists here are upset with Kenya for its military partnership with the USA. But this paragraph right here is why the Kenyan government might fall. The IMF strikes again!!
"Ruto won an election almost two years ago on a platform of championing Kenya’s working poor, but has been caught between the competing demands of lenders such as the International Monetary Fund, which is urging the government to cut deficits to access more funding, and a hard-pressed population."

50 billionaire families have already poured $600M+ into this year's elections — mostly in support of Trump.

That's only 0.6% of their total wealth. It essentially costs them nothing to drown our democracy in dark money.

Hi, bluesky economists and climate people. Can you clearly describe how and when capitalist system collapse happens? What does that look like for ordinary people. Also should we forcefully imprison corporate elites now or just after they collectively destroy many millions of climate victims? Thanks.

Was introduced to this today by my son, by his geography teacher who has become a super influencer in his class!!! 👏 Be warned, - slighty addictive! www.worldometers.info

This reminds of my absolute favourite gambit back in the day I used to argue with deniers on Twitter for sport: "What WOULD convince you that climate change is real??"

The very few that didn't respond with a block or escape would inevitably say something you could easily provide, lol
I would like to pose some hypothetical questions to the insurrection-deniers: Is there anything Trump could have done that *would* have unambiguously constituted insurrection — anything that you’d acknowledge *does* require disqualifying him? 1/

#COP28 BREAKING NEWS 📢📢📢 World looks on saying, 'I told you so!' as unsurprisingly oil and gas lobbists opt to allow preventable global chaos to continue unabated. #juststopoil #fossilfuels

"$700m pledged to loss and damage fund at Cop28 covers less than 0.2% needed"

The money for those who suffer most may well be less than the cost of travel, accommodation and venue for the ~100k attending COP28.
It's hard to take this seriously.

$700m pledged to loss and damage fund at Cop28 covers less than 0.2% needed
Money offered so far falls far short of estimated $400bn in losses developing countries face each year

Global Carbon Budget 2023

Despite record growth in clean energy, global fossil CO2 emissions are expected to grow 1.1% [0-2.1%] in 2023.

Strong policies are needed to ensure fossil fuels decline as clean energy grows!

Anyone paying attention to COP28 and how the background deals and greenwashing are taking the planet in the wrong direction, check out this great summary from @ketanjoshi.co : ketanjoshi.co/2023/12/03/t...
The Man In Charge uses words as a planet-wrecking weapon
COP28 president and fossil CEO Sultan Al Jaber gets weirdly offended at a bunch of reasonable criticisms. Here's why.

Does anyone else find it strange that critics of climate activists say wind farms are worse than CO2 emissions, oil barons & politicians say climate change is not bad coz we can build carbon capture & many world leaders think Hamas brutality is worse than Israel's international law breaking?
