Reading headlines about the US massing forces to Venezuela and ”what is Trump’s aim with the troops ?” reminds me of a certain other country that massed troops at a neighbour’s border 4 years ago and headlines were wondering what Putin’s aim could possibly be

Let's celebrate the update (finally) of Stats NZ Household Living Costs Price Index - a better measure of the cost of living than CPI.
First thing to notice is that a big chunk of the increase in our cost of living was thanks to RBNZ hiking interest rates to tackle the cost of living! [🧵 1/n]

Damn, I read Judith's letter! I'll leave the politics to others, but, lord, the Govt spending stuff is REALLY BAD! I'll try and keep this short.
First up, this bare-faced lie. The countries in the pink circle have a similar-sized economy to NZ. Govt spending is a lot higher in all but one . [🧵 1/n]

Every forecast has the same pattern - doom is around the corner! Cut spending, cancel all good things, make old people work in the mines, etc. Here's spending on Super - the surge is coming, anyminit!
At this rate, we will match current spend in Denmark & Sweden in 150 years time 😱 [2/n]

NB: This time around, Europe didn’t even demand a seat at the table because no one takes this seriously enough or thinks that this will change the game fundamentally.

Also no appetite to sit next to Trump and look dumb when he gets played by Putin
On the Alaska talks:

Trump’s leverage over Ukraine, Russia and Europe has decreased since the spring and Ukraine is in a better position than back then, given their improved own industrial output thanks to the Danish model that many European countries are now implementing

Clear indicator of the double-dip recession here - company liquidations accelerated in 2023 when interest rates were hiked, and then surged again after rates were left higher for longer *and* Govt pulled back on investment. We have handled the last couple of years soooo badly.

Dear Russians, this is not a terrorist attack. This is war.

Ukraine targeted your strategic bombers, not your homes.

Your own armed forces are, on the other hand, constantly terrorising Ukrainian civilians.

More predictable claims from Lux-in today... Apparently tight Govt spending has tamed inflation and enabled RBNZ to reduce interest rates and put money back in kiwis' pockets. Praise be! Let's unpack that BS...

believing equilibrium describes the real world is monumentally stupid and yet here we are, trapped in this broken paradigm
RBNZ and Treasury reckon that the big surge in jobs, employment, good times, and boogie is already amongst us - their 'always return to equilibrium' models predict a return to positive annual job growth in September. [9/n]

The Govt have crashed the economy and kicked thousands of young people out of work. Now they're coming for their meagre benefits - to force them into selling their labour cheap to slave masters in the gig economy (or piling into debt for tertiary education). It is disgusting.

Maybe the alternative and obvious strategy of investing in a medium- to long-term plan that brings the economy into balance, addresses ecosystem degradation, restores full employment, and better insulates us from future global and climate shocks is just.... too woke? [Ends]

3. Leaving the economy on its arse not only tanks tax revenue, it also pushes Govt spend up - benefit costs, rent top-ups to save leveraged landlords, etc. Inconveniently for this Govt, getting out of the hole will absolutely rely on *investment not cuts*. Bill knew this in 2008 tbf [11/n]

Never forget: NZ Govts for 50 years have bought into an economic management model that relies on keeping a bufferstock of kiwis unemployed & desperate.
Jobs are kept scarce, so that kiwis sell their labour at poverty-wage prices. If unemployment is too low, Govt's henchmen at RBNZ crash the economy.

Agree with Frank: at least German MPs still have the guts to let Merz know that they don’t like him and some of his politics and style and therefore won’t necessarily give him an easy time.

If only some GOP members ever stood up to Trump.
unpopular opinion: das war zwar eine saudumme und komplett überflüssige aktion, die in kritischen zeiten das völlig falsche signal gesendet hat, ABER...: dann hat's halt einen zweiten wahlgang gebraucht. dafür steht das so im GG.
