it’s not the em dash, or any one thing. In 2022 we were told the key indicator was citations after 2021. There is no cheat sheet. We either teach students to use their own brains and why, or we do what we are told, like “lean into” ie subsidise the pervert slop machine economy.
This is going to sound conspiratorial, but it is serves the LLM techbros for the 'em-dash = AI' lay-belief to persist.

While em-dashes are diagnostically unreliable, it undermines the legitimacy of real writing/scholarship. And when real can't be discriminated from false, the false can thrive.
I don't doubt this—but it does bug me that em-dashes are used as a heuristic to spot LLM-generated text.

Fortunately I can point to my 2020 doctoral thesis and show that I was overusing and abusing ems well before el el ems.

People need to boycott this show and not just half ass. Shame everyone who plans on watching it. This isn't about Eurovision, it's about Israel getting away with committing genocide because THERE ARE NEVER ANY CONSEQUENCES. They should be untouchable by now. Everybody needs to walk the fucking walk.
Eurovision has allowed Israel to compete in 2026.

Ireland, Spain, Slovenia, and the Netherlands have pulled out of the competition following the decision.

this derives directly from the legitimising “ethical ai use” discourse, the white centrism of ai, of weak and gutless FOMO driven managers, who fucking REFUSE to prioritise student learning and the actual planet ahead of a self-serving careerism that involves subsidising pervert billionaires.
Universities are assembling larger and larger teams to deal with academic integrity issues--mostly focused on AI--while simultaneously holding AI "writing" contests, AI-themed events, "hey, come play with these fun tools!" The messages are so mixed, it's criminal. Because AI is bloated with money.
