the reason i'm becoming an evangelist for South Indian cinema, esp TA/ML, is these films are in conversation w/multiple powerful forces:
Western colonizers, but also North Indian bourgeoisie, local caste elites, local political cronies
and doing it with an approachable familiarity with english
