NEW CANARY ALBUM
Niece and primary disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Roshan Ara Begum (b. 1910; d. 1982) first recorded at the age of 12. After relocating to Pakistan in 1946, she may have fallen into obscurity if not for 2 superb LPs made in 1961.

Bounding through the cold, wet, dark streets of Brussels I shouted “show me all your bagpipes!!”
These in the Musical Instrument Museum are not all of them. But they’re relatively photogenic considering the museum’s lighting.

I am very grateful to The Attic for allowing me to get some things off my chest.
If I never get to write my Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, this will hold the place for where it would have been.
It's the basis for the shows I'll be doing in the EU starting next week.

Nearly a decade ago I came across this yearbook from the still-extant Dzilth-Na-Dith-Hle Community school in Bloomfield, northern New Mexico.

I just want to shout out whoever paid for the ad spot at the back just to say “Hey Man, Rock on.”
I like you.

In 1912, some workers in MA received a paycheck that was shorted by *2 hours* due to their boss's malicious compliance with a new state law.

"Short pay! All out!" yelled a group as they forced all 15K workers out of the building, disabling machines behind them.

This is how Bread and Roses began.

In case you thought blackface minstrelsy was a mid-19th century phenomenon, I’d point you to this reference in John Tasker Howard’s 1931 book Our American Music in which he describes Johann Christain Gottlieb Graupner’s performances in Boston in 1799 following Grapner’s 1795 visit to South Carolina

Now get Jeremy Allen White to play Richard Thompson 1980-83.
Then Townes Van Zandt 1979-83.
Then Waylon Jennings 1977-84.
Then Dee Dee Ramone 1986-92.
Let’s see what it’s all made of… c’mon. Don’t be boring.

Forgotten effort to use music against America’s worst (til now) wave of anti-immigrant sentiment.
Composer Florence Hudson Botsford (née Topping, b. 1866; d. 1954) published 3 volumes of non-English-language folk songs via the Womans Press of the YWCA, 1921-22 (reprinted by Schirmer 1933)

Oswalt’s daughter is 5 years younger than mine.
My daughter’s music was nearly identical as a teenager.
(She’s still heavy into Fiona Apple I think.)
I’m not gonna send her this photo cause who wants to think about being 16 when you’re 21?
The similarities are amazing.
The jumping off points.

Norway's Solvberget library had me as one of their Plateprat (Record Talk) interviewees this week.
A zillion "what's your favorite..." kinds of questions answered by email during two fits of insomnia.

Thanks to Olav for asking me.
