The Welsh journalist Gareth Jones who first brought this to the attention of the UK public came from Barry and his book/diaries of the famine "Tell them we're starving" is a harrowing read. Theres currently a campaign to have a plaque erected in his name on the Knap in Barry where he grew up.

This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.

The Witkoff-Dmitriev plan is even more amateurish than I imagined. It favours Russia although does contain elements that Russia will not like. Premature leaking means that it is no more than work in progress. Here is an annotated version (This is free). open.substack.com/pub/samf/p/t...?

Starmer presented himself as a serious man for serious times. What did we get? More clown.

This research is important because it corroborates what we already knew - that when comparing the UK to peer economies, it has had a big slowdown since 2016. It does so with firm-level data and finds more EU-connected firms have sizeable shortfalls in productivity and investment compared to less.
Brexit has caused almost twice as much damage to the UK economy than estimated by official forecasts, according to new paper from a group of experts including a senior Bank of England economist

I’m just back from Ukraine for the third time. As ever so struck and in awe of the bravery, resilience & sense of humour of the people I met. The rallying around to build new organisations and initiatives that save lives and rescue victims of war. The decision to make art, music - to find joy.

The whole problem with current Labour is encapsulated right here in this paragraph. One hand tries to ameliorate child poverty while the other hand makes it worse.

Some of us think immigrants and their children count. That they, too, are people. Some of us don’t.

This is very good indeed on how Mahmood talks about race. To suggest that immigration policy and racism are linked "reflects this government’s biggest failing, which is that it is essentially incapable of saying that racism is wrong, full stop".

The story of the Labour Party: From Foot to Starmer

Most important point here is the tragedy of the 1992 election. If it had been won, we could have demonstrated that a soft-left party can triumph. Because it was lost, a view took hold that centrism was the height of progressive ambition.
