There’s only one problem with Labour’s immigration plans: they’re completely untethered from reality | Jonathan Portes
The government’s new policy will take us back to an uglier, more dangerous place – and it’s not even supported by the data, says professor of public policy Jonathan Portes

Labour wants to curb immigration: but doesn't want to engage in social care reform

It wants to curb student visas and encourage more UK training: but wont fund unis or FE colleges.

It just tells voter they can have both. /2

I know amist Trump
tariff news that the PEM Convention is on sooooo many people’s mind.

Tl:dr PEM will have modest impact on UK trade, but it can be a decent first step in a UK-EU ‘reset’ for trade.

.@ukandeu.bsky.social has for years produced high quality research on the UK's links with the EU.

Yet it now faces closure because of ESRC grant cuts.

Some 66 of us Parliamentarians (38 MPs and 28 peers) have signed a cross-party letter urging ESRC + UKRI to reconsider their decision.

Tl;dr

The UK should take a two ponged approach: focus first on closing loopholes in the current system while doing that start the long process of implementing a wealth tax in the future.

As always @emilyfry.bsky.social is coming in with quick and brilliant analysis of ONS trade data.

Some worrying services number to watch while some growth in non-EU goods.

Definitely give her a follow!
Quarterly ONS trade data is out this morning after Reeves plugged ‘free and open trade’ in last night’s Mansion House speech. But total trade fell this quarter in current prices – exports fell by 2.4% and imports by 1.6%. A short thread to come...

While a man who said Prozac is the cause of school shootings is being put in charge of health in the US, in London I went and saw Roots with Morfydd Clark at Almeida Theatre and thought it was very well done and would recommend it.
