I've noticed that among movie lovers here, lately there's a renewed appreciation of the craft and polish of '80s/'90s studio movies--their pleasure and polish, their entertainment value. Rob Reiner's early filmography is such a good way to understand that. He knew how to deliver. A true craftsman. >

1. This is how the story "Sanctuary" from Detective Comics #551-552 started.

Back then was INS. The kid showed his passport after this, but his brother is not in the same situation.

I'm really sad to hear that Rob Reiner and his wife were killed. I feel like directors are lucky to have ONE perfect film on the resume. IMO, Rob Reiner had four. What an amazing body of work to leave behind. Thanks for all the great art, Mr. Reiner.

The one thing I'll say that's good out of all this nonsense is how the film community has really grown out of enjoying this kind of inter-personality sniping to become a body of positively, that just loves movies and the people who make them. The pushback against negativity is so refreshing in 2025.

Today’s FYE haul!

(I didn't realize that I'd picked up a Savage brothers double feature until I got home, btw!)

I've gotta say that I'm fairly tickled by that NBC logo in the title card. It feels like the network saying, "Heck yeah, we're NBC and we've got STEVEN SPIELBERG!"

Over the weekend, a Fox News host said homeless people should receive involuntary lethal injection. But, sure, let's go after the comedy folks.

QUANTUM LEAP came up on an episode of TV GUIDANCE COUNSELOR I listened to today! Ken Reid was saying that NBC moved the show to Friday out of disdain, figuring the nerds who loved the show wouldn’t have dates. Judging by the first ad, nerds fought back!

Apparently I'm in the minority on this, but I like this album cover and title! I think it's a bold, strong creative choice to be this blatantly goofy, and I appreciate the bravery-especially in the name of fun!

Remembering the late Robert Redford with a movie I like from four decades: one from the 1960s, '70s, '80s, and '90s.

I like that this selection is so diverse; he did so much during his career and he left plenty of classics behind. He was one of the last real movie stars.

This was today's Sunday-afternoon watching! It's not a making-of documentary; it's more of a celebration of Hitchcock's artistry and of the push-and-pull between his artistic and showman sides. It also delves into his dark side just a little bit.

This is the kind of stuff that will get me to start using Disney+. Good job, Dis.
Disney+ just added (or re-added) a treasure trove of pre-1980 live-action family films, WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY movies + nature documentaries.

They now have more than 230 pre-1980 titles — one of the best single-studio libraries in streaming.

Continuing my commercial kick with this gem from the '90s! It capitalizes on the documentary-crime-show craze of the time (I'm mostly talking about COPS) in a pretty funny way. The Jack-in-the-Box critic is great!

This is part of a series of Midas commercials featuring Lee Van Cleef as the cowboy face of mechanics everywhere! Each of them also feature another celebrity from yesteryear. Most of them are good (of the ones I've seen), but this is my personal fave!

I think ELECTRIC DREAMS is a fun-but-flawed romantic comedy (with some interesting things to say about AI's role in the arts), but there's one part that's flawless, and that's "Together in Electric Dreams." In fact, it WAS a hit in the UK!

This commercial popped up during @junkfoodcinema.bsky.social's episode on DOUBLE INDEMNITY and it definitely made an impression! That jingle sounds like an ‘80s heartland-rock singer ate an In-N-Out fry and couldn’t contain his rapturous joy.

Let’s talk about an action thriller that moves on a good clip, keeps you guessing and is expansive & gorgeous. SHOOT TO KILL (1988) absolutely rips and deserves its place in the canon of great buddy action films. If you don’t own the DVD it’s currently available to watch on YouTube.

I don't have anything to say aboiut the TV show THE STUDIO. I however, would like to take this opportunity to say that John Gregory Dunne's book THE STUDIO could make an excellent miniseries (under a different title, of course).

Seemed like a good time to bring it up!
