Stop calling it war. These are terrorist attacks being committed by the US government. Every foreign nation should be lining up sanctions.

I just heard a commentator say basically "well, how would Americans like it if some other country kidnapped trump and his wife and sent them off for trial?"

I would guess that most Americans would be grateful.

So it’s ok for a country to invade another country and kidnap its president? I hope that the rest of the world is paying attention. I have a president . . .

Watching Trump speak and justify why the US is entitled to invade another country and kidnap the president makes me think that when we started talking about the “post-truth” era, we had no idea of how deeply post-truth it’d become.

Perception of reality is now random and optional.

Rubio is claiming that they did not need Congress permission because it was a law enforcement mission. The US is behaving as a global police state, extending its own arbitrary legal decisions to the whole world.

This is not a problem just for Venezuela.

Duiding:
Trump says we need to go after drug cartels.

Meanwhile, he disbanded a DOJ task force that took them on.

And he pardoned a former Honduran president convicted of drug trafficking.

Trump doesn't care about drugs — he wants to be able to declare war on anyone he labels an enemy.

It's a power grab.

MTG on the capture of Maduro:

“If prosecuting narco terrorists is a high priority then why did President Trump pardon the former Honduran President who was convicted…for trafficking hundreds of tons of cocaine into America?…This is what many in MAGA thought they voted to end.

Boy were we wrong.”

It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.

The American people don’t want to “run” a foreign country while our leaders fail to improve life in this one.

Q: What do you see as the future of Venezuela's oil industry?

Trump: We’re gonna be very strongly involved in it. That's all. We have the greatest oil companies in the world.

I seem to have missed the golden age of international law when all countries but particularly the US did everything according to the rules.

I also seem to be missing the ideas for creating another.

Dutch kids shooting fireworks at police and firefighters is a good model for thinking about populist politics bc nobody pretends there is any legit grievance or ideology. It’s antisystem violence as existential act. A lot of populism is the same.

Ik hoor in Nieuwsweekend dat de Nederlandse jaarwisseling in veel landen verbazing wekt. Dat we die enorme schade en staat van oorlog hier accepteren. O.a. voorpagina New York Times.
